"Must Have" Manual - Belongs on Every Investigator's Desk
By Theodore N. Swift
Investigators, intelligence analysts, and others who need to extract powerful, freely-available data from the Internet, should check out this 3rd, greatly expanded, edition (described further at [...] It's packed with explicit detail, including links, examples, and practical exploitation methods that give the reader significant new strengths in extracting open source intelligence (OSINT). The methods Bazzell reveals are legal but unknown to most.
After doing online investigations for almost 20 years, I'm confident that most of the techniques Bazzell reveals are not well known to the investigative community at large. These are techniques that aren't widely taught -- insider methods -- usually restricted to seminars led by a handful of top specialists who are recognized leaders in OSINT research.
Unfortunately, when it comes to Internet research, many untrained searchers stop after dropping a few random, unstructured, words into Google or Bing -- praying that something useful will result. Those days should be history. Some of the techniques Bazzell shows include: how to properly query search engines to get back meaningful results; explore websites; investigate IP addresses and domain names; crack cell and landline telephone numbers; investigate online aliases and usernames to link them to the true identities behind them; break email addresses; extract intelligence from Facebook, Twitter, and most of the other large social networking sites; extract intelligence from online photos and make maximum use of satellite imaging and mapping tools and determine the physical location of investigative subjects through geotagging tools. There's a lot more.
This is a hands-on, plain English, nitty gritty exploration of online research techniques gleaned from the author's more than 15 years experience as a cybercrime detective with the Alton (IL) Police Department and as an investigator with the FBI Cyber Task Force. It's not, as the author makes clear, a history book about Open Source Intelligence policy or a debate about the ethics of online reconnaissance methods. It's also not a book about government public record research. There are already very fine books that have been written on that subject. It's all about how the reader can extract maximum useful intelligence from the Internet. It's an eye-opener and I highly recommend it to all in the investigations and intelligence field.

One of the best books on Open Source Intelligence out there.
By Chris J
I know that's saying a lot in the head line, but I really feel that way. I came across Mr. Bazzell's 2nd edition in my second Intelligence Analysis class in college. The book was recommended by the TA. I had read a couple of books on Intel Analysis, but they were about the what, and the why, not the where or the how.
When I found out there was a new edition coming out I was really excited to see what would change. The third edition has changed slightly. A few of the go to tools I relied on have been removed, with even better tools replacing them. There is more options and ways of thinking during searches that make the tools listed previously even more valuable. For example I learned how to use pipl.com in ways I didn't it could be used.
Lastly, Chapter 17, is going to be a help to anyone new to searching. New this edition, this chapter covers the workflow. While that was something books used in classes showed Mr. Bazzell puts the work in to an easier to digest format. While it's meant more for investigation, it's still very useful for anyone wanting to find more information through open sources.
While I do different work than Mr Bazzell, his book has really helped make my OSINT related projects. I see better things in my projects due to the additions to this edition of the book

Must Have for Investigators and Researchers
By Investigative Professional
As always, Bazzell knocks it out of the park with his latest update to Open Source Intelligence Techniques. The book itself provides incredibly valuable tips and tricks I've been unable to find anywhere else, enhanced by Bazzell's own investigative insight. In addition, the resources Bazzell outlines in the book are easily available on Bazzell's own website, which is a big value add. Being one of the very few books to cover online tools useful to investigative and research professionals, this book and its accompanying website are invaluable to me as an investigator. The only thing I worry about is Bazzell's claim on his website that this will be the final version of the book - say it isn't so!
