William P. Brown is the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, and an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Bill has also taught at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA, and at Emory University in Atlanta. He is the author of several books and numerous essays in biblical studies, including The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science, and The Ecology of Wonder, and Seeing the Psalms: A Theology of Metaphor.

PreS-Gr 2–Sneezy the Snowman is cold. In an effort to warm up, he drinks hot cocoa and subsequently melts. Now a puddle in the surrounding snow, he asks three children (and two playful cardinals) to rebuild him. Once complete, Sneezy is again too cold, so one of the little girls gives him a hat. Unfortunately, it is not enough to keep him warm. He attempts a dip in a hot tub only to once again melt and be rebuilt, and adorned with an additional garment. He has a similar experience involving a campfire. This time, however, the snowman gains a coat. Now he's too hot. At last, the children get him seven scoops of ice cream and he reaches a happy medium. The repetitive, rhyming text reads well. The bright, cartoonlike illustrations are hand drawn and colored in Photoshop, and the small details will reward those who have a close look, particularly at those cardinals. Even snowmen get chilly sometimes, and on a particularly blustery day, Sneezy just can’t stop shivering. With his own ingenuity and the help of three multicultural children, he tries cocoa, a hat, a hot tub, a scarf, a campfire, and a coat to warm up, but with each attempt, he melts, and it’s up to the kids to build him up “brand new” again before yet another puddle can form. At last, the kids realize that ice-cream can play a key role as a temperature-regulating agent. The rhyming text keeps the snow show moving along at a brisk, bouncing pace, and the series of problems and solutions creates an entertaining, recognizable pattern. The large digital illustrations are colorful and uncluttered, and they slyly integrate the additional antics of two boisterous cardinals, who cavort along with Sneezy until his happy, Goldilocks-like proclamation, “At last! I feel just right.” Although not a necessary purchase, this may be just the thing to freshen up wintry storytimes. Preschool-Grade 2. --Andrew Medlar

Sneezy's the best!

What a fun book! Sneezy is a cold snowman, and when the kids help him get warm... well you probably can guess what happens! They finally figure out a way to keep him around which involves some stylish outerwear and lots of ice cream. The author has written a delightful book that works very well as a read aloud. The rhyming is spot on, and after just a time or two of practicing, I had the rhythm mastered pretty well. It flows beautifully, and there are plenty of opportunities for the reader to ham it up a bit. There's a nice repeating refrain that is sure to have any group of kids joining in.

The illustrations here are excellent. They are large and bright, making them perfect for group sharing. The artist also manages to include some delightful details for any child who wants to peruse these pictures further. Sneezy is the star because he is so expressive! He's not like most other snowmen out there, in that his facial expressions are much more fully realized. Even the small cardinals are expressive and their faces are hidden! I'm not sure how the artist did that, but these illustrations are incredibly engaging.

My only complaint about this one and it really is not enough to even take away any of it's well deserved five stars is that it's a bit long. I probably wouldn't try this one with young preschool groups. Older preschoolers and kindergartners will no doubt love it. A solid recommend.

A great read for kids and parents!

This book is such a fun read. . . my son can almost recite it and he's 4. Over the winter Maureen and a friend were selling washcloth puppets and one looked like Sneezy so now when we read the book we act it out with our puppet and have a blast!

The book is completely creative and will be an easy read for little one's who are just learning to read as well. Maureen has done it again with this book and we are also looking forward to the second in the "Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep" series.

Are manners not important anymore?

Has no one noticed that Sneezy never says thank you or please? The kids keep giving him their clothes to keep him warm, while they shiver in the cold. But he never acknowledges their gifts; he just keeps demanding more things, and complaining about how cold he still is. When he does something stupid (for a snowman) and melts, he demands that they "Make me brand new!" But he never apologizes for making the stupid decisions, nor does he say thank the children for rebuilding him multiple times.

The message it gives children about helping others in need is nice, but the lack of reciprocal manners is disturbing. Sneezy needs to acquire some gratitude and needs to learn how to show it. My daughter won't be reading this.

About the Author
Herbert Girardet is a leading author on sustainable development. He is a recipient of UN Global 500 Award for outstanding environmental achievements, and an honorary fellow of The Royal Institute of British Architects,. He has produced 50 documentaries on human environmental impacts all over the world. He has been a consultant to many clients, including UN Habitat, the Greater London Authority. The London Development Agency and the Corporation�of London, and the cities of Adelaide and Vienna. He is Director of Programmes at the World Future council and a consultant to Arup on the development of the Chinese eco-city Dongtan.
