Wanted! a book by Caroline B. Cooney

The book Wanted! is a very well written suspense book filled with mystery and thrilling events. The story starts with a phone call from Alice's dad. He tells her to take the corvette and bring the disks labeled TWIN to the place where they get milk shakes. Even though Alice does not have her license he says it doesn't matter and to just bring them any way. Alice tries to ask him why but he hangs up before she can. Why would her dad want the disks and for her take the car out when she can't drive? Alice is about to leave when she hears people come into the house. Scare, Alice hides under the car till she thinks they are gone. When she gets in the car and drives to the place she hears disturbing news on the radio. Her dad has been murdered. The police and her very own mom thinks she is guilty, because of confession e-mail letter. Now the police are after her and the real murder too. Will Alice be caught? If Alice is caught, who is will be the one catching her? The rest of the book tells of her exciting adventure of being a fugitive. I had a good time reading this book and thought it was a very good page-turner with cliff hanging chapters. I recommend this book for people who like action pack thrillers. The reading level is Young Adult. I suggest if you like this book, you will like other Caroline B. Cooney books such as, Twins and Driver's Ed.

In an emergency....

What would you do if your father frantically called and gave you specific instructions to follow, including driving his Bronco when you are just fifteen and don't yet have your license? Alice dallies and soon someone comes into her house talking about killing.

From this point on, Alice's inherent strength for survival kicks in and she acts on adrenalin. Hiding under her father's Bronco saves her the first time. There are many more to go. She hears on the radio that she is wanted by the police for the murder of her father. Apparently, Alice sent an email to the police confessing the murder, but of course Alice knows better. Her mother's radio/television statement seems accusatory. What is Alice to do? Where is Alice to go?

This is the set up for the story. Most of the novel has Alice confronting one set of dangers after another. Not that she is a superhero, she uses every wile, every subtlety in eluding police and the real killer. People who trust unknowingly help her find shelter and hiding without knowing that is what they are doing. What is most important is that she has an all-important disk that apparently contains secrets key to the revelation of the murderer.

How the story unfolds in the last quarter is fast-paced and surprising. I think the point is to show how we often do not know people around us and how often we do not open up to those we love.

Wanted: freedom from hidden pasts and ability to show love.

Caroline B. Cooney is a very popular young adult writer. This book makes the fourth I've read and quite enjoy, but it is not on the level of adult fiction. If a movie, it would be PG.

Who Killed Alice's Father?

Alice's parents had been divorced for a while. Alice wants to spend some time with her father so she goes to live with him for a couple of days.

One day when school is off for the day Alice gets a phone call from her father while she is doing her nails. Her father asks her to take a file marked T.W.I.N., take his car and drive to a place that they used to get milkshakes. She does not want to do this because she is only 15 but she agrees. Several minuets later she hears somebody come into the condo that her father lives in. At first she is relieved thinking it is her father, but soon realizes that it is not. She hides under her father's car as she hears a big thump and the computer start up. Then she hears a man say in a voice she half recognizes that "I killed him good." She does not know what he is talking about, but thinks it dealt with the big thump.

After the guy left she went to the place where she and her father went to get milkshakes and is too crazed to do anything for a while. A while later she gets a coke and a milkshake and goes back to the car. She turns the car on so she can listen to the radio and that is when she learns that her father is dead and she is the prime suspect.

This leads to Alice hightailing it out of the ice cream place trying to stay one step ahead of the police and the real person that killed her father. Because she wants to evade the police and the person who killed her father she goes from the mall, to a college campus, to the house of her father's work colleague, to her father's condo to the house of her mother's boyfriend.

While on the lamb she manages to read what was on the TWIN disk that her father wanted. It is an autobiography that details Mark Robie's (Alice's father) life. It also talks a lot about his brother who worked getting company secrets from competitors. According to her father his brother was killed by his boss because he was going to tell what he was doing.

Worth taking a look to see another MVVM tidbit

MVVM in WPF has been a slippery program design area for five years now and few sources have touched on it well. The early books on it handled it badly or were never even allowed into print( MVVM Unleashed ). I have four books on this subject and only one ( Designing Silverlight Business Applications ) gives this subject the proper introduction that it should have and even here it is a lot of work to put together the real concept. The problem is that none of these authors knows how to teach a subject properly. MVVM is a complex subject and it needs to be introduced by concept and then various approached should be compared. Finally, various software examples should be shown to the reader so that he has firm constructs to compare back to the initial introduction. As far as I know, no one knows how to teach software design any longer.

Although it is instructive to see the examples here, this book should only be used to increase the reader's understanding of MVVM design. The author gives a one page introduction to his design approach and launches directly into the code without any real explanation. The download of the code page doesn't exist.

In his favor, the code in the book is worth studying and his use of locators is worth a look. Since MVVM examples are hard to come by, The book is worth the three stars I gave it. MVVM design is still somewhat of a mystery and any working code is worth taking a look at unless the price is far too high.

Good for those who need an "applied approach"

This book is very good if you are actually needing to quickly develop interpreters and compilers using C. There is no much theory as the author says in the preface, the focus here is to construct tools. I particulary liked the way Mr. Mak used to gradatively introduce the parts necessary to compiler construction, by increasing the complexity and functionality of the code through each chapter. At the end we have a functional, old style, interpreter with debugger and a compiler, all of these to the standard Pascal language, but the routines developed here can be easily ported to deal with other languages.

The C code style used in this book is quite old fashioned (the book is from 1991), but I have ported it to MingW, Visual Studio 2012 and gcc without any problems and everything worked just fine. After doing the convertions, I payed more attention to the fact the code is actually quite functional, with a very good modularity of the routines and tools. It's easy to use it for different purposes, the scanner, the parser, the expressions analyser, each one is placed on it's own module to be used in separate if necessary.

The parser method that Mr. Mak decided to use on his tools is the recursive descent, which is not the fastest method to parse sentences in a programming language but for sure is the easiest to understand since all the code here is written without the help of lexical tools (lex & yacc).

I made a mistake regarding this book, I bought first the 2nd edition of it which uses C++ code instead of the standard C. The C++ code in the 2nd edition is not really good, it is badly written and it's outdated in a way that makes difficult to use it in nowadays compilers, but I realized it was just C code ported to C++ in a rush. that's not the case in this first edition that uses the standard C which now I'm porting to C++ in my own way. I know there is a recent 3rd edition of this book where the tools are written in Java, but have not read it yet.

This book provides a detailed explanation on how compilers and interpretors (a high level concept) reads near human language text, and creates byte code that can be interpreted or executed on your system.
Using Pascal as an example, it begins by building a scanner, defining tokens, and reading a text stream. Complete examples allow the audience to either read through the example while reading the explanation, or copy the code into any C compiler for a quick test drive.
The explanations and the level of complexity increase as he reaches further toward building a full compiler, yet stops short of creating a full Pascal compiler. The reason being .. he gives the audience everything they need to complete the job, and let's them figure it out.
Overall, this is a good book for anyone interested in parsing any type of document. There are no drastic jumps or leaps of intuition that need to be made. It provides a good understanding of how to parse other languages like C, Java, HTML, XML, or otherwise.

Big help for self study

First of all, this book is the C edition. The newer editions use C++ and Java - the Java version being the newest one. This might not be the book for those who are looking for comprehensive coverage on the topic, but in my opinion, this book will help anyone who wants to get started in coding a simple compiler/interpreter that works. I am using MS Visual Studio 2008 with this book and so far I am understanding the topics presented. This is the most hands-on book on this topic that I have found.

Knowing further on Scarpa's life-work

Overall it's an a-okay edition, that gives a global idea of Carlo Scarpa's scope of work during his career. But if you're looking for extensive material in Scarpa's works you'll be a little disappointed: lacking of drawings (plans/sections, diagrams) that help to understand the projects, and a lack of original sketches from Scarpa himself. Another disappointment is the lack of photographic content for the Olivetti Store/Offices, or a lack of photographs of details from the iconic Brion tomb. With all this said, due its relation affordable price/ good quality print, I advise in favor of purchasing the book to all Scarpa enthusiasts.

Inspirational book on Scarpa's work

A book can't be all things to all people. Some prior reviews criticize this book for one thing or another, but for me it is just what I was looking for. Full of large, beautiful photographs of many of Scarpa's projects, each combined with a quick history and/or walk-through.
If you want more text, get McCarter's book. If you want great photographs, get Beltramini's book, or Taschen's book. Or do as I did and get them all.
