Death in superhero comics is notoriously impermanent—characters ranging from world-beaters like Superman to minor bit-players are killed off only to be resurrected later—but never more so than in this miniseries, in which dozens of fallen heroes and villains, including Aquaman, the Martian Manhunter, and Elongated Man, are reanimated as evil, zombielike forces under the command of Nekron, the embodiment of death, who wants to kill all living entities. As always, it’s up to the stalwart superheroes—most notably the original Flash and Green Lantern, both recently returned from the grave themselves—to set things right. Like all such companywide crossover events, the story line was integrated into nearly all of DC’s many titles, but the major events occur in the nine issues collected here. Even so, the absence of the supplemental stories makes Johns’ thorny narrative even more abstruse, especially for casual readers. Reis’ art perfectly matches the script: ostentatiously flashy at the expense of coherence. But for die-hard fans, Blackest Night, which sets in motion monumental changes that will be felt throughout the DC Universe, is a must-read. Grades 9-12. --Gordon Flagg

Epic good versus evil with a rainbow twist

I read all the reviews prior to embarking on this epic read reading Blackest Night (BN) and Blackest Night Green Lantern (GL43-52) simultaneously in the order they were published: basically BN0-BN6 switching back and forth with GL43-49 followed by GL50-51, BN7, GL 52 and finally concluding in BN8. Does it help that much understanding this story? Not that much with the exception BN8 wraps things up and is the bridge to Brightest Day. You could read these 2 graphic novels independently and remain just as confused. It does help to read the books prior to this especially the 2 preludes to Blackest Night which are Rage of the Red Lanterns (red power of rage) and Agent Orange (Orange power of Avarice), less so on the endless Sinestro Corps (the yellow power of fear).

I give the art work 5 stars and the story 3 stars. The story is very very long if we go back to the various preludes such as Rebirth and Fear leading to Sinestro Corps with endless battles, endless flashbacks, annoying redundancies. It is a classic battle of evil (black, death) and good (white, life). It's uniqueness is to be found in the use of different colored lantern corps with assigned emotions or attributes. Only through the combination of these colors and powers/emotions/attributes does light (absence of color) emerge victorious, the exact opposite you would expect, since all colors combined really equal blackness. This quasi-philosophical graphical novel is entertaining but drags and we learn that chaotic and emotional life is better than a boring universe which is at peace through the blackness of death. So now we wait for Brightest Day for the conclusion.

This book made me...

Wow. What an awful reading experience.

I read the "Blackest Night" TPB (#0-8) first. Come to find I should have probably read "BN Green Lantern" first, since the first comic in the event was, Green Lantern #43, at least according to a couple sources. (Maybe it wasn't, I'm still confused.) But it wouldn't have mattered, this whole series is a mess. I found "Blackest Night" interesting but it was a neverending "middle" with no beginning or ending. BN GL was apparently a non-essential tie-in that also felt like a huge "middle". The experience -- nay, mistake -- of picking it up has frustrated me to the point that I won't even bother with the remaining BN titles (or any other DC series). Probably more of the same, one-dimensional characters and redundant space bargaining. Nice art, though.

The must have companion piece to one of the greatest DC events...

Blackest Night easily matches, perhaps surpasses, any of the "Crises" that have come before this in the DC Universe.

As I noted in my review of the Blackest Night collected TPB (Blackest Night 1 - 7), the event works like a game of chess, and much of the stage setting for this chess game happens "off board" - i.e. not in the mini series or collected TPB, but here, in Green Lantern vol 9: Blackest Night (collecting issues 43 - 52). Some additional context is provided by Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night and several other regular series issues, but I'd say this volume of Green Lantern is a must read if you are to truly make sense of everything; if I hadn't, I'd have had several WTF moments while reading Blackest Night. I doubt this book would be fun/ satisfying to read standalone.

Why DC? Why couldn't you just publish a chronologically ordered single/ multiple volume TPB ed for Blackest Night? As things stand, people have to rely on reading orders and concordances to make sense of it. (Not to mention buy additional books). I'm therefore forced to dock a star from my rating... (I didn't for Blackest Night)

Anyway - this book is worth reading, and I'd recommend any reader to go through this and the Blackest Night collection simultaneously. There are several helpful "reading order" type guides available to walk you through. Me? I just read the first issue of each, and then whenever events in Blackest Night seemed a bit off, went back and read the next issue of GL: Blackest Night. Worked well enough, although once or twice I was spoiled mid-read...

About the Author
John Bray obtained a PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1997, which was followed by postdoctoral positions at Birmingham and Queen Mary. He has held a lectureship at Queen Mary, University of London, since 2007. He is heavily involved with the online web-atlas of group representations, a popular resource in the group theory community.

Derek Holt has been at the University of Warwick since 1978, where he was made a professor in 2001. He has been active in group theory research for over 40 years and has over 100 publications to his name. He was awarded the LMS Junior Whitehead Prize in 1981 for his solution to the long-standing problem of classifying groups with more than one end. He has co-authored several books including the influential graduate text Handbook of Computational Group Theory (2005). He is Editor-in-Chief of the London Mathematical Society Journal of Computation and Mathematics, and is on the editorial board of several other journals.

Colva Roney-Dougal received a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2001, following which she held postdoctoral positions in Sydney and St Andrews. She has been a lecturer at St Andrews since 2005 and was appointed to Senior Lecturer in 2010. Her research on the classification of primitive permutation groups has been turned into highly-used databases in MAGMA and GAP. In addition, she is heavily involved in the popularisation of mathematics, and in this capacity is a regular presence on Radio 4's 'In Our Time' with Melvyn Bragg, as well as other national radio shows.

An excellent intro for readers with some math background

This book is a welcome introduction for readers who are comfortable with basic differential equations and vector calculus. As an applied mathematician interested in learning the fundamentals of MRI, I had grown quite frustrated with the simplified literature on one hand ("MRI for technologists", "MRI for medical people", "MRI for dummies"...) and the professional literature on the other, which is directed at people already immersed in the study of MR technology. In contrast, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject for applied mathematicians (though this may not have been the intended audience), as it makes no assumptions regarding reader's science background and thus explains thoroughly all relevant E+M, physics and signal processing. But most importantly, it does so without cutting mathematical corners. This results in a far more lucid and logical exposition than books which try to protect the reader for his/her own good.

Valuable Resource

This text is invaluable for anyone interested in MRI. It is a very good intro to the field, and if you understand this book you have a solid foundation for exploring more modern MRI texts. Up until a few years ago, just about every journal paper in MRI cited this book. When I started grad school for electrical engineering, I went down the path of medical imaging; I would not have gotten very far without this book.

After seeing Chonda live in Chicago last year, I am convinced that she's our very own comedian angel sent by God to wake and shake us! Chonda's book is a true inspiration, but actually listening to her speak and sing is an even bigger treat. It's hard to find her tapes, both video and audio, but definately worthwhile to search for. I've purchased three extra books and tapes to give as presents. This is truly a MUST Buy for Christian women of all walks of life.

The price is not right, but an excellent book

Perhaps I shouldn't argue with the publishers of an optimization textbook about price calculations, but how on earth did they come up with this figure? Unless you have corporate funds to back you up, go to the library and get it there.

Having said that, this is a terrific textbook, a neat reference on all the important results in stochastic optimization. Its presentation is clear and concise, and prerequisites are briefly gathered in no less than fourteen appendices. It would be ideal to have it on the shelf, but... have I mentioned the price?

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match

After Kenadie is left at the altar, and publicly criticized, she shores up her heart, and lets that moment define her. She starts a dating site/matchmaking service called Binary Search and uses the intuition of her relationship managers and computer code to find the best possible matches for her clients. She doesn't want love for herself anymore, but she is happy to help others find it.

Enter Jason Hadley. He's the old friend of her best friend, and as soon as he meets her he knows that they belong together. Now he has his work cut out for him. He needs to convince Kenadie to give him a chance. If she won't date him, then the best way to stay close to her is to use her as a matchmaker, right? (Poor misguided man!)

This is my new favorite book from Jennifer Peel! I can't wait to introduce it to my best friend .

I loved the characters! Kenadie's Grandmother and her friends were referred to as the Nanettes. They were hilarious the way they were pinching bottoms, cackling, and pimping Kenadie out. I also loved Kenadie's best friend and business partner, Zander. He reminded me of Lucy's neighbor, Joe Jr. in the movie While You Were Sleeping. "Are you wearing a black bra?" And his question is answered with a smack to the back of the head. I loved the back and forth relationship between Kenadie and Zander. Jason was perfect (as well as perfectly misguided). I loved how patient he was with Kenadie, how he didn't give up, and how he used humor to ease the tension when he sensed her walls going
up, and I loved his Southern manners, even if Kenadie didn't.

Like her other books, His Personal Relationship Manager, had characters who I could relate to. I felt like I knew them, or desperatly wanted to know them! I loved the humor in this book (cough...Zander). It was full of clever dialogue, and had me laughing out loud many times, I highly recommend it to fans of romantic comedies.

I LOVED it and can't wait for more!!

This one is my favorite of Jennifer Peel's to date! Kenadie has been burned and burned good. After she was jilted at the alter, relationships have a bad taste to them and she wants nothing to do with them. Seven years later, she and her best friend, Zander, are working at a company she created to help others find their one true love. She's only ever had success stories. But something like that can't last, can it?

Zander is the kind of best friend that ever girl needs and wants. He's a little inappropriate, but his heart is huge. He is great at building up self-esteem, listening, and distracting Kenadie from the depressing things in life. She can count on him for anything. They once tested things in high school to see how a relationship between them would go down, but it so wasn't happening.

Life changes when Zander introduces Kenadie to Jason, his former college roommate. Jason is a knight in shining armor. He's recently single from a bad breakup as well, and I loved it when it was mentioned that he has the patience of Job because that's what I was thinking for most of the book. He's kind, chivalrous, handsome, and will do whatever it takes to give Kenadie space, while still trying to woo her. He's the perfect hero for this story!

There were moments when I wanted to slap Kenadie. Really...7 years is a long time to be so bitter. It just goes to show how deeply she feels and how much she wants to protect herself from that heartache again. She is a little slow when it comes to hints and clues, but it's all worth it.

I loved the journeys and progress that's made. Kenadie has a wonderful family and support and they're all so patient with her. Jason and Zander each have their own secrets and journeys to go through as well. There's nothing more satisfying than a story with a great plot, strong characters, and a romance that makes me swoon. This story has it all and more! Zander is the best friend that every girls wants and needs; Jason is patient and persistent; and Kenadie is stubborn and protective, but when you mix them together with a dating site, fireworks, surprises, and magic happen...and I loved every minute of it!

Content: a few mild expletives; mild romance and innuendo. Clean!

Another great book from Jennifer Peel. Lots of fun. I loved both Jason and Zander. Kenadie was so stubborn she started to drive me crazy but it made for a great story. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

The early Christians, the Arabs, and the Crusaders are followed by succeeding invasions by the Tartars, Mongols, and the Mamluks. Modern history of the area is dated from the period of the Ottoman Turks, who were removed by the British after World War I. All this leads up to the contemporary period and the establishment of Israel and its continued difficulties with the Palestinians and the Egyptians, both of whom will share leadership of the Strip. Several chapters deal with Israeli–Palestinian relations, primarily the Palestinian attacks on Israeli citizens. Broad sweep of Gazan history

One of the few books I've discovered covering such a wide swath of Gazan history. Seemingly well researched, definitely well written as a story, the author, a reporter, has visited the region since the 1970s and can rely on first hand accounts for much of his panorama.

About the Author
Peter A Hirst is a highly experienced coach and coach educator. He is the former Performance and Coaching Director of England Squash where he had overall responsbility for the England national teams, player pathways, coach education and accreditation and all supporting programmes; during his tenure of office England held all World and European team titles. Peter was also a squash player for over thirty years and has a vast coaching experience at all levels. For ten years he was head of Coaching New Zealand, the generic coach education arm for sport in New Zealand.
