About the Author

Dr. Leslie Portney is the Director of Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy for the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Leslie graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute, a PhD in Gerontology from Boston University, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Medical College of Virginia, and a Certificate in Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a licensed physical therapist in both New York and Massachusetts.� Leslie has authored a multitude of books and has contributed to a variety of different publications including the PT—Magazine of Physical Therapy.� Leslie is currently a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and on the Task Force on Uniform Outcomes Assessment.

Dr. Mary Watkins is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy for the MGH Institute of Health Professions.� Mary graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute and a Master of Science from Boston University.� Mary is a licensed physical therapist in Massachusetts, a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. Mary has authored many book chapters and contributed to a number of different publications including the Journal of Hand Therapy, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation and the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy.�

If you have a rehabilitation background and need to understand statistics this is a great book. I bought this book as a supplement for my statistics class. It explains concepts so well! Our professor changed to this book the next year. All the OTs and PTs in my PhD program have bought this book. This is in my keep forever collection. Everyone in my department has the book and only loans it out with strict instructions for its return.

About the Author
Tony Abou-Ganim grew up in the bar business, learning the craft from his cousin Helen David at the Brass Rail Bar in Port Huron, Michigan, before going on to develop the cocktail programmes of numerous restaurants in San Francisco (working with Harry Denton) and New York (working with Mario Batali) and at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. He operates his own beverage consulting firm specialising in bar staff training, product education, and cocktail development, and also serves as the national ambassador of the US Bartenders Guild.

Fourth, it has a lot of unusual recipes that you won't find elsewhere, and also a good number of "batch" recipes for parties.

Be aware, however, it will not replace a basic cocktail book as it does not contain the "standard" drinks so if you are going to buy only one recipe book, you should look elsewhere. (Consider Dale DeGroff's "The Craft of the Cocktail.") Also, as another reviewer noted, virtually every recipe in this book calls for at least one exotic or uncommon liquor, so there is a financial commitment to trying each recipe.

As several others have noted, there is an evolution process towards bartending competence. Imbribe, Wonderich, Dale DeGroff, Vintage Spirits, Bitters, youtube videos, et al are standard phases. This book is a later phase, although could probably be used by novices with some success. The content of this work starts with the basics and moves through them quickly. He sort of implicitly assumes that you have already accessed many of the sources listed above. Then we hit the good stuff - meta-cocktail thinking, or why things work the way they do. He follows that with a set of new recipes, which as noted in other reviews involve a vastly new set of (expensive) ingredients.

I've been laboring diligently through the classics, and have built a pretty damn good collection of booze. For this book, that is sort of a not bad thing to have in your background and inventory, but be prepared to move on quickly. Also, to be amazed at how hard many of the new ingredients can be to obtain, even when you have access to good suppliers. The web will not get you what this guy is using, you are going to end up making some of them at home. He does tell you how. As one of my college profs explained, "Life gets complex."

I got this for my mixologist-in-training (amateur) husband who owns as least 4 different cocktail/mixology books and receives IMBIBE magazine. He has met his match in this book! It has raised the bar! It has asked him to move beyond all of the information he has already absorbed on how to "construct" a cocktail to begin seeing cocktail-making as an art form. I would say it asks you to start seeing it as chemistry meets high cuisine in a glass. The author uses a grid to introduce each season's best ingredients and what liquors go best with them. He gives you ideas for what flavors pair well and he gives you all kinds of recipes. He also gives you a list of what tools you will need to make drinks from beginner level through advanced. It also has PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES... a beautiful book with lovely lessons, great info and delicious recipes. Well written- a great read for someone who is interested in learning more about drink making from scratch- even a beginner with curiosity will get the basics, including history of the cocktail and info on various spirits. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who just wants a cocktail recipe book-- you'll be asked to buy WAY too many obscure and expensive liquors and ingredients for the new and inventive drink recipes provided! Get a basic book and once you feel bored, move on to something like this :)

Must reading for sequence stratigraphers,

The title may be slightly misleading and even off-putting but do not put down this book. The authors summarize several years of research done at Colorado State University. This reasearch has allowed them to develop some powerful process models which explain the evolution of fluvial systems over time. These models, while derived from flume work, apply well to the real world. Observations discussed and inferences put forth by the authors have been documented in the field by researchers for companies such as Exxon. They fit quite well with the sequence stratigraphic ideas found in the professional literature published by AAPG and SEPM (to name a few). Every geologist who wishes to become a competent stratigrapher should read this book. A great follow-up to Schumm's earlier book 'The Fluvial System.' CJ

Companies often have gigabytes of data that need to be analysed. This book is a very useful compendium of techniques that can be applied to the data. Because it may be that a sophisticated understanding of your data is a strategic advantage to your company. If not a core competence.

The book covers data in many different fields. From financial, engineering, medical and even bioinformatic. The methods applied to these data span the gamut from Artificial Intelligence to neural networks. While some methods are specific to the type of data being studied, the astute reader may be able to modify these for her own situation.

Great Historic Overview

This books gives a great overview of Himalayan exploration, cultural aspects, and an understanding of the tribes of the region. Reading about explorers being thrown into a pit of tigers amongst other weirdness is quite entertaining. A nice selection of historic photos also accompanies the text. Recommended if you have a library of books on this region. I bought this book over 20 years ago and would never loan it out to anybody.

I discovered this book by accident after seeing the movie Found. I couldn't find it on Kindle so I downloaded his other work. While this book will not appeal to a mass audience, it was just what I was in the mood for. Dark, actually really dark, but that's what I dug about it.

Please write more books! The world needs more authors like you.
