An Outstanding Work Making Extensive use of Primary Source Data

An extremely well written in depth account of Manresa documenting the challenges experienced by its royally chartered civic government within medieval Catalonia as a financial revolution took hold. This level of historical and economic data is certainly necessary to better appreciate the impact that waves of plague and seemingly never ending conflicts had on a Catalonian inland city in the late fourteenth century. This work clearly explains, with examples, the financial structure fostered by the Crown of Aragon's monarchy to obtain Corts approved extraordinary taxes supporting its various external conflicts and civil war with Castile. The impact of the financial revolution within Catalonia is addressed with comparison made to other cities using data from the Florentine survey of 1427 and the Manresa Liber Manifesti of 1408. Significant primary source data is used throughout with tables to clearly indicate the summarized results of what was found. References and notes are provided in abundance.

As a graduate student, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in medieval Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon. It provides an excellent detailed example of Catalan life and financial issues useful when working into Alan Ryder's book, "The Wreck of Catalonia".

Digitally we are

I remember when I purchased this book through Amazon as an e-book. I was in my hotel room in Orlando relaxing after an invigorating but mentally draining day at Sleuthfest, Florida Mystery Writer of America's annual writer's conference. Going through several newspapers that I peruse regularly for events and other items that might be useful incorporating into my writing of thrillers, I ran up on a review for Hello Avatar: Rise of the Networked Generation written by B. Coleman.

The author's premise that we live in a world impacted by forms of digital mediation such as Facebook, messaging systems, the Internet, and virtual reality games is nothing new to the generations of twenty somethings and younger. Explaining the development of this impact to those like myself who are not computer geeks (or professionals, whose life's work revolves around poking around the inside of a computer's brain) but used the IBM Selectric typewriter (and still knows how to use it) and grew up with DOS and the antiquated forms of Lotus 1-2-3 and Paradox database is what drew me to Coleman's book. The author's ability to explain how the revolution came about, albeit in a somewhat summary fashion, with minimal use of jargon, was comprehensible. (The glossary was helpful as was reading the book on the Kindle with its dictionary). The origins of digital computing would and have filled a Library of Congress' worth of tomes.

Coleman's book is not a dry treatise but an engaging look at real world applications and talks with legends in the field of digital mediation, virtual reality applications, and augmented games. That is one of the biggest selling points of the book; the others, the glossary and the endnotes.

Coleman gave me an inside look at worlds that mirror the physical board and dice game, Dungeons and Dragons. Without overtly judging those who she wrote about, Coleman explores how digital me impact effects change in users. This is a nice surprise, given that one of the studies involved BDSM and cannibalism.

It was the next topic that hooked me - augmented reality in the form of a supersized and more complex version of geocashing. Her writing about games involving players physically on the ground in various locales interacting with others through virtual reality using smartphones, tablets, and I suppose laptops, was the most interesting of chapters. Imagine a set of your friends in Geneva, Switzerland along with dozens of others in other locales playing an integrated virtual game based on traditional board games such as Life and Monopoly. The roll of the dice, spin of the wheel and taking of a card is done on a device while the moves required by the dice, wheel, and card are carried out in real time in the locale or wherever the game takes you simultaneously as others are doing the same.

While showcasing augmented reality games, Hello Avatar balances this with attention to applications for business and industry and moves on to crowdsourcing and her conclusion. By doing this, Coleman reinforces her premise that digital mediation is forever here to stay and must be dealt with if one is to be successful.

Sometimes I just want off this merry-go-round. I'm sick. I'm tired. And I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Know what I mean? It's a tough road we sickies travel. We have to deal with our daily symptoms and pile of pills, plus the doctors who scratch their heads, acquaintances who either think we're faking it or are certain we'd be better if we just tried their latest whatever, and the friends who think they're encouraging us when they say, "But you don't look sick!"

Some days I just want to hear somebody say it stinks. Somebody who really gets it, who will tell me a funny story and remind me I'm not alone. Somebody who will tell me I really can get through this day, and they're cheering me on.

Funny thing is, though there are over 100 million people in our country living with chronic illness, we aren't very good at getting together to encourage one another. We could schedule a support group, but it would be exhausting having to get dressed and get there and interact with people. We could plan big events or conferences, but most of us would end up getting sick that day and not being able to show up!

Therefore, one of the best ways for a sick person to be encouraged is through a book. A book doesn't expect you to answer a bunch of questions like, "Are you feeling better?" or mind if you're still wearing your pjs. A book won't get upset if you only read a page or two then fall asleep because you were up most of the night.

And since I couldn't find just the right book--a blend of empathy, encouragement and practical help--I wrote it!

This book let me alternately laugh and cry!

When I first looked at this book, I thought, okay, it's not too long, sounds intriguing, I think I'll take a stab at it. I found this book on the free list, which made it all the better as, I'm a cheapskate! (LOL!)

Several minutes later, I'm reading. Chuckling. Snorting. The cartoons were spot on and I think her straightforward style was exactly the balance needed to bring home her points.

Then, as I read further, I surprised my self by tearing up. Kimberly now felt just like a sister; someone you could sit and have a coffee with, getting sympathy and a gentle kick to avert the pity me syndrome.

Thank you Kimberly Rae, I will be looking for more books from you! Do me a favor though; make 'em longer!

Almost 2 years ago I was diagnosed with FMD (functional movement disorder) I left my work in April 2013 took sometime for peace went back to work 8 months later Im a mess now not that I wasn't during the 8 months it just reared its ugly head the harder I work. I work with children with disabilities its amazing when your in the middle of helping a child and your dumb founded you can't answer a second grade question or remember what a verb is it boils down to I'm at the stage of just try to figure out how I feel about this and what to do next but i can relate to you in some ways noise,crowds, tremors, movements I can't control, I've become a hermit but I'm trying to get out more garden trying to find where I belong and yes why people don't understand stinks. This book was truly inspiring thank you for sharing and giving some really good things to think about!

Completely Encouraging

As someone who deals with chronic pain, I found this book to be easy to read, comical, and completely encouraging. If you deal with pain, day after day, you will find this book very refreshing. I appreciated the questions at the end of each chapter - they really made you think and assess where you are right now in dealing with chronic pain (emotionally and physically), and nudged you to go to the next level in accepting your situation with a better attitude. I highlighted parts of the book (on my Kindle) that stuck out to me, to refer to on a later date when I need some encouraging words. I highly recommend this book! Great read! Thanks, Kimberly!

Apparently this is the first of many, so I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
