Some Good Ideas, but also a lot of Fluff

This book has some good points and ideas. However, I feel only 1/3 of the information is valuable. The other 2/3 of the book is fluff. I do recommend reading it to find the good ideas (the better chapters are 7, 8, 9, 12-15), but you should have the expectation of combing through pages of boring, common-sense stuff (as well as poor grammar). My favorite chapter was chapter 12 about the value of patience and tips for obtaining it.

The Good:

The author does have some good points and ideas in the later chapters of the book that will be helpful in my own trading. The following are some of my favorite quotes:
"When you trade by your heart instead of the chart, you are finished." (p. 71 top)
"I have learned it is better to be out of a trade and patiently waiting and wishing to be in, than to be in a trade impatiently waiting and wishing you were out!" (p. 151 middle)
"The real secret to being patient as you trade is to find something else to do in the meantime." (p. 153 bottom)
"Effective listeners at trading learn that their emotions have no meaning-- candlestick formations, trend lines, and the charts do." (p. 171 top)

The Bad:

Sometimes I feel like the author is trying too hard to be a motivational speaker. It's annoying and not inspirational the way he attempts to do this. Here's an example of seven sentences of trite phrases in a row (it's almost like he is pulling this garbage out of an old quote book):
"As you strive for perfection, aim for excellence, not perfection. The freedom to be your best means nothing unless you are willing to do your best. The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in determination. Whatever you do, don't do it halfway. Well done is better than well said. Paint a masterpiece daily. Always autograph your work with excellence." (p. 47 bottom)

I wish there were more specific personal examples from his personal trading career. The story about how he blew his account up and lost several hundred thousand dollars had some interesting points which I learned from. I just wish he would've included more stories like this one.

I find it somewhat annoying that he refers to himself as the FXCHIEF in the book without any explanation of how he earned this title. It seems pompous to call yourself this without explaining how the title was earned or given.

I also found one of his claims far-fetched. He says, "I teach them [my students] trading methodologies that allow them to make 300-plus pips a day and then walk them through the mental disciplines necessary to accomplish such a task." (p. 144 bottom). I don't believe that anyone can consistently make 300 pips per day. I would like to see proof of this.

Here are some examples of the terrible grammar. I don't even understand the meaning of a couple of the sentences.
p. 15 top - ...you will need to earn their trust and worthiness of their time and mentorship.
p. 40 bottom - "What we learn in life with a desire to do it right or have it be well done is well done forever."
p. 83 bottom - "If we don't create the change we need, tailored for the betterment of our lives, change will create it for us."
p. 195 top - "These habits can participate in teaching you how to protect yourself with everything you do before you get involved."

Here is an example of a contradiction I noticed:
p. 25 middle - He says greed is not capricious.
p. 28 middle - He says greed is a capricious monster.

Here is an example of a false statistic he uses:
p. 60 middle - We retain 10 percent of what we hear, 30 percent of what we read, 70 percent of what we do, but 100 percent of what we feel.

FX THIEF not FX CHIEF as he would like you to believe

FX newbies. Please ask FX Thief(Chief)
1)how many people`s lives did he destroyed in South Florida and Caribbean(not hundreds but in thousands)?
2)How many of his star traders are behind bars or on the run?
3)How many of his ex traders were running ponzi schemes?
4)How many pending lawsuits does he have?
5)What happened to his itradefx brokerage
6)Please ask him how much money did he steal by faking signals on computers?
7) He simply rents software from fibonaccitrader.com(avail for $55) and charges retail clients $155/month (talk about rip off)
8)Please Think for yourself, if he was really a successful trader, why would he be trying to advertise heavily to teach others to be successful.
9) Everything he teaches in his courses is available for free on the net, check out babypips
10) In my opinion Jared`s strategy is to prey on newbies.
Please please do your research before giving one red cent to Jared and his institutes.

good read but trying to cover too much ground

While reading this book initially, I felt I was wasting my time as the author tried to cover a lot of areas outside forex trading making this a medley of self help books. Later in the book however he started to include more relevant content to trading and I felt I got something out of it that is worth my time.
For those who hasn't read self help or motivational books before, this might be a book for you. I had an expectation that this book is a tailored one to Fx trading so I was a bit disappointed. This objective of making this book Fx specific could have been done in one tenth of the pages I believe.

Fergal Dearle is a seasoned software development professional with almost 30 years' experience in software product development across a wide variety of technologies. He is currently the principal consultant with his own software development consulting company, Dearle Technologies Ltd., engaged in design, development, and architecture of new software products for client companies. Recent projects have included the integration of the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk) into Apple's new Apple News application for iOS 9 and the reengineering of the G-Cloud Digital Marketplace for the United Kingdom Cabinet Office (https://www.digitalmarketplace.service.gov.uk). He is a committed mentor in his local CoderDojo in Wexford Town where he teaches Groovy to the young coding ninjas. He has been recently nominated as a CoderDojo Hero for his work. In the past, Fergal has worked in lead architect and developer roles for Candle Corporation on the OMEGAMON product, which is now part of IBM's Tivoli product suite, and as the development manager for Unix implementations of Lotus 1-2-3. Great book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It first introduces Groovy, Gradle and Spock as it lays the groundwork for digging deeper into DSLs and their rationale.
Writing DSLs is an important part of project delivery where there's a need to mimic domain structures and concepts within the programming environment, at times when traditional OO modelling is not enough.

This book covers theory and practice of the subject very well - recommended reading for those who want to venture into DSL programming.

Great book, could use some consistency in its examples

All in all, a good introduction to DSLs in the Groovy language

The first chapter is a decent enough introduction, it serves well to setup the rest of the book. It's a nice introduction to the concepts of DSL & explains why Groovy was chosen as the language of choice.

The second chapter introduces Groovy at a basic level, one change from the previous edition that I'm happy was done, was to split the language concepts in depth into a standalone chapter. In the previous edition, the 2nd chapter was a bit of a behemoth.

The third chapter introduces some basic Groovy DSL that you may or may not have heard of. This gives a nice peek into Gradle & Spock & helped me correlate how they are, in fact, DSLs.

The fourth & fifth chapter introduce, in this order, Groovy's concepts (you may skip this if you aren't a total beginner with Groovy), and Closures in Groovy (you could skip this as well, unless you come from a background where closures are new, in that case, don't skip it!)
It's important to note that this book isn't to learn Groovy, (I'd recommend Groovy in Action, 2nd ed from Manning), the basics that you'd need are covered, but no more, and more concepts are introduced as you need them in your DSL. I'm judging it as a gateway to DSLs in Groovy & not as a gateway to Groovy the language. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Chapter 6 is where we dive into our first Groovy DSL, a Twitter client. I'm a little conflicted by the example, which is well done, but I'd personally have chosen something like a Banking example, where you could showcase different domain rules & you'd have a lot of scenarios with tons of boilerplate code in Java, which could be broken down into a Groovy DSL.

Chapters 7 introduce us to some patterns & advanced techniques (or Power Features, as suggested by the chapters title) that we can leverage in our DSLs. This is where I started to sort of disagree with the book. I would have preferred that a single Domain be used as the basis for our example application/DSL, wherein we build it up & make it more feature-rich, by adding the concepts into that single DSL as these concepts are introduced to us.

Don't get me wrong, the examples are clear & do a great job of explaining the concept, e.g. Chapter 10, Building a Builder, has a great example of using these patterns to build a database seed builder (something I've tried to do in Java, only to have it devolve into an unholy mess)

Chapter 8 again does a good job of explaining (what is a tough topic to digest for me) Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), I thought it was a neat, well-thought out chapter, with a nice enough example implementation of a state machine at the end.

Chapter 9 shows how Groovy DSLs Spock & Grails implement features & techniques we saw earlier, this is where the book starts to win my attention back. It was nice to see how the techniques we read about earlier are used in real-world, full-fledged DSLs

Chapter 11 & 12 are where it really shines again, first with an example in 11 for a rules based DSL (which should have been our example application from the beginning, in my view) & then with a full-fledged game app, complete with a backing MongoDB & a web based front-end. Again, the examples are well done, the explanation is really great.

Conclusion: If you have the first edition, you could give the 2nd ed a skip. A good book, but the constant switching of contexts lost me from time-to-time. If you're looking to understand how DSLs are implemented (& want to move beyond Java) this is a nice starting point.

The underbelly of a tourist destination

People love reading about the real life sagas of the Italian mafia and Mexican drug wars. And this saga is no different except the location is set by the sea in idyllic Thailand where - like Italy and Mexico - tourism co-exists with a parallel world of corruption and crime. It can only help everyone concerned and made aware of the underbelly of Thailand although it is sometimes hard to confront the truth about such places.

A very insightful read. I highly recommend this book!

A very insightful read. The scandal of the mismanagement of the Thai tourist industry, and the endangerment of so many tourist lives, has been going on far too long. The book highlights the fact that the U.S. State Department has officially refused to release the figures of how Americans die in Thailand each year. That in itself is a scandal. I highly recommend this book!

When tourism goes wrong

Once upon a time there was a beautiful kingdom of magnificent palaces and temples set against lush green jungle. Foreigners could come and go, welcomed by elegantly spoken, gentle Thais, who loved their King and lived happily within their religious principles. Then tourism, disrespect, greed, corruption, unbridled development and unchecked pollution moved in. This book is an unflinching catalogue of all that can and does happen to unwitting people in Thailand. Dense in parts, but well worth the effort. There is no happy ending so far, but it can be fixed. It is hoped that both tourists and Thai tourism operators take note of this book in order to protect what was once a beautiful country and people, as well as the visitors who continue to flock there.

A knowledge of econometrics, statistics, and matrix algebra at the level of a final-year undergraduate or first-year undergraduate course in econometrics is sufficient for most of the book. About the Author
Anindya Banerjee was gained his doctorate at Nuffield College, Oxford and then became Junior Research Fellow at Jesus College. Juan Dolado was Lecturer in Economics in the University of Oxford from 1986-7 and gained his doctorate at Nuffield College. He has held a number of posts at the Bank of Spain, including Senior Economist and Lecturer in Economics at the Bank's Centre for Graduate Studies. John W. Galbraith taught PPE and econometrics at the University of Oxford from 1984-5 and was a Research Fellow at Nuffield College and a Lecturer at Wadham College from 1986-7. He has also worked as an Economist at the Bank of Canada. David Hendry is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and of the British Academy. He is Visiting Research Professor in Economics at Duke University and holds Special Lectureships at the University of Iowa, McMaster University, and Queen's University, Ontario. He is Governor of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research and a Consultant to National Economic Research Associates. He is joint editor of the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics and on the editorial panel of the OUP journal, Oxford Review of Economic Policy. He was formerly a Lecturer and then a Professor at the London School of Economics and held editorial posts on the Economic Journal and Econometrica.

I find this text to be extremely useful. This, along with the Juselius text in the same series on the Cointegrated VAR are good to read before Johansen's text on Cointegration in the same series.

I had to keep reading

The Burning Bride takes place in modern day India. The central story revolves around an archaic practice known as the dowry.

A dowry is given by the bride's family in the form of money or gifts to the groom as part of the marriage contract. Although the giving and receiving of a dowry has been illegal for decades, it is a deeply ingrained custom in a culture that is millennia old.

Uma marries into a family who doesn't possess the sense of honor most Indians have. They extort money from her parents and when the money is gone, the bride is considered of no more use. That is when the death threats begin.

One element of the story that really impressed me was it's multi-character cast. The author did a wonderful job of creating numerous, yet distinct and believable characters. The author also forces the reader to connect with them, pulling out an array of emotions.

Although there are many characters and subplots, the author manages to keep the reader's attention with the plot's quick pacing and easy to read style. Yet, they never glossed over pertinent information to achieve this effect.

Overall, The Burning Bride is a compelling and gripping novel. I had to keep reading, needing to know what was going to happen to the protagonist. Yet, at the same time, I was caught up in the history, culture and story of the moment. Need I say more?

Fascinating story, highly recommended!

The Burning Bride is the story of Uma, a young woman, whose life changes when she marries Vijay. Uma’s family have already given Madhu, her mother-in-law, a dowry (the payment that the bride’s family make to the groom’s family for the wedding). But when Uma moves in with Madhu, Vijay and their family, Madhu increases the pressure on Uma and her parents for further dowry payments.

The story, released on International Women’s Day, is told from the point of view of nine different women, including Uma and Madhu. It provides a fascinating insight into the practice of dowry which is, amazingly, regularly still expected despite being made illegal many years ago. Without wanting to give away too many spoilers, the book covers a range of controversial issues including violence towards women. The fact that it is told from the perspectives of both the victim and the perpetrator gives this book its strength. As Uma’s life becomes increasingly difficult, it is interesting to see how the other characters rationalise their behaviour in their own minds. The dynamics of the relationship between Uma and her mother-in-law, Madhu, are particularly compelling.

The Burning Bride is a thought provoking, absorbing read, with a real focus on character development. I really loved Part V, it was the perfect ending. Highly recommended.

Affected me deeply. Had me crying.

Very Compelling read. I was deeply affected by the story -how the dowry system is destroying women's lives and is still widespread in spite of being illegal. Uma's story had me crying in parts. Her dreams of a happy,married life are not fulfilled as the torture starts and continues by the mother in law demanding more and more dowry.The author has skilfully woven all the characters to make an excellent read. One day I started reading in bed at 11p.m. and when I next looked at the clock it was 2 a.m. -I had been so engrossed in the story.
I have now bought the paper copy and am going to re-read it.
Highly recommended. !

Unique instruction/Rewarding results

If you would have told me that after the first fifteen minutes of Leon's Shoot Where You Look seminar I'd be shooting BBs one after another off the pavement with a BB gun I'd have said you were crazy, but it happened. A friend and I went to Leon's seminar to brush up on our shooting in preparation for a dove hunting trip to Argentina. I bought Leon's book as well and practiced for results. My buddy shot the highest percentage of the group on that trip and I shot better than I ever have. I have always been a good rifle and pistol shot but swinging a shotgun was a handicap. The techniques Leon uses in his book and in the seminar, along with a good bit of practice, builds muscle memory and shooting habits that get you results and increase your enjoyment of the sport. Just this last week on spring break my 11 year old daughter said she was interested in hunting. The resort where we stayed had a sporting clay range so we took off with a 410 and a guide to get her started. She was having a hard time hitting the "rabbit" until I stopped and showed her a technique I learned from Leon. She picked a target, swung the shotgun and pretended to squeeze the trigger each time she passed the target spot. Immediately afterward she loaded the gun, shattered her first target and now I have another shooting enthusiast in the family! We go to work on the rest of the book next week! Thanks Leon!

Hello here!
I am from Russia and have received the original paper book "Shoot where you look" from my friend from USA at Dec 2012. I liked it indeed so I decided to buy the Ebook also to have it in my Kindle with me.
I am shooting IPSC shotgun and thanks to this book I can shoot the first shot now near 0.65 sec at 15 yard consistently in standard class from first position. Without sights .
Probably it is not good for the somebody but it is breakthrough for me personally.
Also it is not a problem for me now to shoot the inch sized target at 4 yards with BB gun without sights also. And hit tossed vertically tennis ball at 6 yards from BB gun.
But concerning to the author, Leon Measures, it is only the beginning stage regarding his system. Need practicing )

Book is written in a kind and, at the same time, in a fun way. It includes a great number of practical advices and information and real stories from the life of shooters.
Very good book for the hunters, clay shooters and even IPSC shooters.

If you want to become a GREAT shooter this is for you!

There are three simple steps which Leon teaches in his book. Master those 3 and you become a GREAT shooter.
SO where's the catch? The catch is that you need to train those three steps. The good news is, you don't have to spend a fortune for shells, you can do it in your home!
Great resource and a must for every shooter.
