He holds a Ph.D. in Cross Cultural Communication and Language Learning. Dr. Humphries is co-author with Carol Padden of Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture and several other books and articles related to ASL and the culture of Deaf people.

Carol Padden is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego where she teachers courses on language, culture and media. She is a graduate of Georgetown University and received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego. Her recent research includes studies of reading development in young deaf children and she has written extensively about the cultural lives of Deaf people in the United States. I am the author of the Michel Thomas series of CDs to learn spoken Mandarin Chinese.

This is a very helpful DVD if you know how to use it.

I learned by trial and error so I will share what I learned and hopefully you will benefit from my experience.

This DVD does not include everything in the accompanying book. The only things you will find on it are those parts of the text with the closed caption sign next to them.

The actors are professional, the signing at the speed of deaf signers, the camera work is excellent and very clear.

My suggestion is to go through all the related material on your own and, hopefully ,with a study partner ( not essential but helpful) and only then look at the DVD.

Stop the player whenever necessary (I watch on my Mac) and review any part where you really don't follow what the actors are communicating.

This is a wonderful DVD if you understand its strengths and weaknesses.

It will not teach you ASL. It will give you practice in seeing the signs in action and at the speed deaf signers use. At first this may appear overwhelming. Welcome to the club. It is overwhelming if you don't follow it. So work with the text, review the exercises in the text on your own, and then, finally, use the DVD as a nice dessert to give you feedback on what you have learned and need to review.

Be very eager to make mistakes!! This will give you feedback and help you to become even more comfortable with communicating in ASL.

Excellent teaching tool

I received my book yesterday. After looking through it for an hour and studying the first pages, I learned how the book was written. Several learning aids are included in the pictures and once you study what the aids do, you realize how much thought went into this book. I intend on taking a formal class using this book. But until that time I am going to begin on my own so I have a head start. I have read reviews from people who say that the pictures are too hard to understand. They did not take the time to read the explanation for the pictures. This is a fine book and I cannot wait to get into it. It is my intention to become certified as an Interpreter and this book will give me a great start. This is a book for people who are serious about study, not those who want learning and understanding handed to them on a platter.

Solid, but I wouldn't recommend it

The text is solid as a teaching resource but not something I would recommend. The DVD is poorly produced as an educational tool; the actors sign much too quickly for beginners, and it becomes a joke to students instead of a resource. Therefore, the DVD is unhelpful at best and harmful if you consider demoralizing effects of failure and frustration on student motivation to learn. This problem is particularly important because many of the picture definition entries in the text are difficult to decipher, and the DVD is little help in that regard.

The text is not very engaging. It is comprised mostly of grammar rules and definition entries, with too few learning exercises to employ and practice the material. The indexes in the back of the book are poorly done for a textbook.

It definitely outperforms the other "go-to" text people seem to use, Vista Signing Naturally (which has a lot of problems), but it's not a strong text. Neither text seems grounded in foundations of theory on education, or uses what is known from research in education and psychology about learning and memory, foreign language aquisition, etc. Lastly, it's expensive for what you get, especially the DVD.

It took longer than expected to arrive, especially given that I have Prime service.

About the Author
John S. Townsend is the Susan and Bruce Worster Professor of Physics at Harvey Mudd College, the science and engineering college of the Claremont Colleges. He received his B.S. from Duke University, his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, and was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.�He has been a visiting professor at Caltech, the University of Southampton in England, Duke University and Swarthmore College, and he was a Science Fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University. He loves teaching, especially quantum physics. Townsend is also the author of A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics.

I don't know what book the other reviewers read...

I used this book in a sophomore modern physics course. The book is an excellent introduction to modern physics and quantum mechanics. It eschews bra-ket notation and a more common historical approach for an intuition-based approach developed in the first chapter (the quantum nature of light) and continued throughout. The book, overall, emphasizes a qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of physical phenomena, providing an excellent foundation for a junior-level intermediate quantum mechanics course. Although occasionally chatty in tone, the book originates from the author's lecture notes from teaching the course, and as a result the sections are in bite-sized pieces. The occasional chattiness does not get in the way of rigorous derivations, though. I would strongly recommend this book to sophomore level physics students; its level is too elementary for a junior level course, but it serves as an intuitive introduction to the subject.

Great book for introductory course!

This book is not quite like all the other introductory quantum physics books out there. I have been reading and trying to look for a textbook to learn Quantum physics, and this is it. Upon reading reviews of other books on amazon I came across a comment (the reviewer was talking about Richard L. Liboff's book) that summarizes the consensus of all other quantum textbooks in the market:

"Not a great text for a course, but then again.... what quantum text *is* a good book for a quantum course?"

I believe that this textbook (which is relatively new in the market) is a GREAT book for a quantum course. As the title suggest, it truly does have a "fundamental approach" to the world of quantum physics, more so when compared to all other introductory quantum books.

In the end, you should really give Townsend's book a chance! This book might not surpass Liboff's or Grifith's when it comes to being used as a raw "reference" text, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that there is no better book to teach undergraduates what quantum is all about.

I would not be surprised if it becomes the most popular introductory quantum textbook for physics undergraduates!

PS: I also appreciate the price tag that the author has set. It really feels like Townsend wrote the book to teach students and for his passion on the subject, rather than for making money off undergraduates.

Vague, Uninteresting

I believe that a student could probably go from an introductory physics course (which nowadays should touch on the basics of modern physics anyways) straight to Townsend's more advanced Quantum Mechanics book and not lose anything. For that reason, I am not sure why he wrote this text. The exposition strives to be clear, but the details are so obscured that that it was very unsatisfying to endure.

But I did appreciate that it was a "modern" modern physics text---my university used the similar McIntyre book for Quantum Mechanics and I enjoyed it very much.
A major difference was that in the latter bra-ket notation was introduced immediately which was delightfully more simple than the vague verbal approach.
The concreteness of the linear algebraic computations immediately gave the students a sense of learning something new and of computational ability in the subject.
And throughout, the mathematical justification of the physics was much more rewarding.

In all, this the least interesting physic text I have used, and I wish I could have skipped the course that used it.

shed light on the tangled history of viking exploration.

I was amazed when I saw that the Gears' were publishing a non-fiction book about the history behind the books. The fan-site was thrilled. People of the Songtrail, which will be published in May, is the interaction between the Viking explorers and native people in North America. During the 900 -1200 AD little warming period of the Medieval period which increased mobility of sea travel. This resource shows the reader the actual written record of the travelers of the epic Sagas that gave rise to the legend of men like Eric the Red. Explaining the social dynamics and religious reasons for these far a field travels into the unknown. The book is the usual well researched and an understandable text which the Gears use to shed light on the tangled history of viking exploration.

A very short intro to People of the Song Trail.

It discusses "song trails" trails that lead to heaven beginning with the Norse and Celtic versions. They all believed that heaven could be reached and that earth could be a paradise if people lived properly. This book is written in a very personable way and not dry at all. This book is a very short preparation for the new series they are writing called People of the Song Trail. I am looking forward to reading the series.

Finally a Viking history

Very seldom do we see such a thorough description of the Viking and Celt presence in America. This was an excellent and easy read. My only wish is that it were longer!
