Baby Knows Best: Raising a Confident and Resourceful Child, the RIE™ Way, by Deborah Carlisle Solomon

Raise self-confident, self-reliant children using the RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) Approach.

Your baby knows more than you think. That's the heart of the principles and teachings of Magda Gerber, founder of RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers), and Educaring. BABY KNOWS BEST is based on Gerber's belief in babies' natural abilities to develop at their own pace, without coaxing from helicoptering or hovering parents. The Educaring Approach helps parents see their infants as competent people with a growing ability to communicate, problem-solve, and self-soothe.

BABY KNOWS BEST is a comprehensive resource that shows parents how to respond to their babies' cues and signals; how to develop healthy sleep habits; why babies need uninterrupted playtime; and how to set clear, consistent limits. The result? More relaxed parents and more confident, self-reliant children.

Review
"One of the best things that ever happened to me as a mother was discovering RIE. I'm forever indebted to Deborah Solomon and my other RIE teachers for helping me slow down, understand and respect my baby. Even though my daughter is now nine, she is still a RIE baby at heart: calm, confident and self-motivated. Baby Knows Best is a treasure of insights and wisdom. I will be giving this invaluable book to every new mother I know." --Maria Semple, author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette

"The RIE program is the single most relatable, intuitive, and common sense approach to the modern day conundrum of parenting. Baby Knows Best is the guide book. It helps you get back to basics and makes you a better, more confident parent as you learn that Babies do indeed Know Best. A must-have." --Jamie Lee Curtis

"I think RIE should be a national program so that parents all over the country can have the opportunity that my family had." --Dee Dee Myers, former White House Press Secretary

"This terrific book is written by someone who really understands daily life with a baby. Deborah Carlisle Solomon shows how you can build an enjoyable relationship with your baby through the power of observation."--Sue Gerhardt, author of Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's Brain

"Outstanding! Absorbing and powerful. Deborah Solomon's experiences augment Magda Gerber's teachings and expand our thinking about who babies are and what they need. This book is loaded with potent new ideas--ideas that in some ways are quite different from the usual advice experts give parents. Easy to read, eye-opening, hard to forget!" --Janet Gonzalez-Mena, co-author of Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers and author of Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences

"An invaluable contribution for parents and for anybody who cares about young children. RIE offers a gentle, supportive approach that fosters your self-confidence and helps you rediscover the joys of raising a child. A refreshing departure from the didactic, overly prescriptive books that seem to dominate the parenting literature. I strongly recommend it." --Alicia Lieberman, PhD, author of The Emotional Life of the Toddler

"RIE gave us a loving methodology for how to do the most important thing in the world--understand and nurture our babies. It fostered a communication and interplay that we've built upon all their lives. This was invaluable and loving knowledge." --Jason Alexander, actor

"How to be attentive but not intrusive, loving but not smothering, kind but not indulging, guiding but not controlling, strict but not rigid--all this is wonderfully laid out in RIE's Educaring Approach. We are raising an independent being that I can feel incredibly close to. Thank you Magda Gerber and all the wonderful infant educarers!" --Hank Azaria, actor

"RIE has been a blessing in our lives, giving us the chance to learn that our baby can teach us best when we observe carefully. We've learned to respect him as he expresses his needs." --Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and his wife Elosa Maturn

"A quietly brilliant parenting book, full of wisdom and calm guidance."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

The only child rearing book you need!
By Fielding Edlow
Deborah Carlisle Solomon's book is a perfectly laid out gift of a more peaceful, loving, nurturing way to raise a child. RIE has enabled me to slow down and really SEE and HEAR my child - to put spaces and pauses in our daily dialogue so I miss less and see more. It has helped relax me as a parent and help our entire family be more present in our daily lives. My daughter learned how to self-soothe in her crib and play by herself because of tips and gentle guidelines from Deborah. My daughter has only recently been speaking in full sentences but I feel we've been fully communicating since we first met...

This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy
By Anya
This is a good book explaining and summarizing the RIE philosophy, but to be honest I am not sure what makes it much different from Magda Gerber's own wonderful book "Your self-confident baby". "Baby Knows Best" presents the same concepts in a slightly different tone which I found a bit preachy at times (as opposed to Magda's warm and non-judgemental approach). I found the word play in the title "the RIE way" a bit too much, too, as it sort of implies RIE=right. To clarify, I am a long follower of RIE and believe in it wholeheartedly.

How to Relax and Enjoy your Baby
By Elisa Schwartz
I discovered this book when my daughter was a few weeks old. I had read so many different books at that point and I was incredibely overwhelmed with all the conflicting advice. In an act of desperation I started browsing through Amazon, and luckily this book had just been released so it featured prominently. My first thought was "Baby Knows Best?? Thank God, because I certainly have no idea what I'm doing." From the first chapter I heaved a huge sigh of relief. Everything made sense, all the advice was cohesive and part of a well-developed methodology. The pressure went way down. Observe your baby, don't try to do so much, trust yourself and trust your child. I have a fairly anxious, Type-A personality, so Deborah's advice allowed me to let go a bit, relax, and I started to enjoy my daughter so much more. She is 10 months old now and I still go back to this book for guidance, and it helps me every single time. After vetting so many books this is the only one I now recommend or buy for my expecting friends.

Vanessa never wanted to be a contractor, but ever since her husband died, she has been trying to hold together his business. Her attempts are constantly hampered by sexy, charming Joe Coleman, another local contractor who wants nothing more than to buy her out. Now they're thrown together in a job at Eden Manor, a bed and breakfast and huge renovation job that can only be completed if they work together.

Vanessa is willing to be a professional and work with Joe if she has to. But she trusted him in the past and only got burned as a result, so she's never going to let down her guard with him again.

It would be a lot easier if he wasn't so irresistible--and if he didn't seem to want so much more from her than her business.

sweet and sexy enemies to lovers romance!
By Maria Rose
This is the first novella in Noelle Adams new Eden Manor series, a spin off from her Beaufort Brides series, which ended with Kelly and Peter's story Accidental Bride (an oops - best friends accidentally get married in Vegas! romance). At the end of that story Kelly and Peter had bought a mansion, Eden Manor, and were working at restoring it to its former glory to make it into a successful bed and breakfast retreat. That sets the stage for this story, in which Vanessa, whose husband passed away a few years ago, is struggling to continue the renovation business he started. She's got a plum job working on the mansion, but so does one of her rivals, Joe. When she was first widowed, Joe showed an interest in Vanessa, but she quickly came to realize that what he really wanted was for her to sell him the business, resulting in a messy breakup, and a continued rivalry. To her annoyance though, she still feels a flare of attraction whenever Joe is in the vicinity, and he still gets under her skin. Joe and her have fallen into the habit of trying to one-up the other, something Joe has always taken as the 'game' that they play (a way to not openly acknowledge that there is something still between them). But for Vanessa, it's serious - her livelihood is in jeopardy and it's not a game to her. Stuck working together on the mansion renovations, can Joe convince Vanessa that he's truly sorry for what happened in the past and get her to give him a second chance?

I really enjoyed this story! Vanessa struck me as a woman with high expectations of herself, and the character flaw (familiar to many) of being reluctant to ask for help. She's put a lot of pressure on herself to continue her deceased husband's business, not really taking into account how much of herself she's been pouring into it and how that has affected her. Her relationship with Joe is fraught with tension, after discovering his deceit three years earlier. Being attracted to him definitely doesn't help!

Joe comes across as a confident, hard working man. Yes, he made a mistake, by initially dating Vanessa and thinking that she'd be happy to sell him her inherited business. They are both in the same line of work, competing for the same jobs and the services of special contractors, and his idea was partially born out of the egotistical masculine intention that she wouldn't be able to handle the business on her own. But a funny thing happened, and he found himself falling for her. Too late though, as Vanessa discovered his real intentions and wouldn't listen to any apology at that time. it's been a rivalry that Joe has really wanted to put behind them, but that Vanessa has been determined to continue, all the while fighting her attraction to him. Joe came across as sincerely apologetic, willing Vanessa to forgive him his mistakes and to see that she is more important to him than any company. As they work together, the chemistry between them leads to some steamy scenes, and a cautious but workable friendship. It's going to take a lot of work for Joe to repair the damage he caused, but he shows time and again that he's willing to put in the effort. I loved how the story progressed, the struggle to forgive and the eventual happy ending for the couple. I found it quite emotional at times, sympathizing with Vanessa and even found myself shedding some tears ( a sign to me that the author has succeeded in pulling me into the story). It was a surprisingly sexy and ultimately satisfying enemies to lovers romance. 4.5 stars.

Ugh! Not again.
By MJenningsDBQ
Fool me once...
It really is too bad. The first book I read by the this author (Substitute Bride) was so good.
However, this is the second book in a row that (Hired Bride being the last) where the MC is spineless and without any sort of pride or conviction. The second book in a row by this author that I will not finish (28% is as far as I can get).
Vanessa goes from despising and mistrusting her rival to making out with him on the same page. If it was after some sort of conclusion to the reasons she mistrusts him, fine, but the author makes no attempt at a reconciliation before the MC caves in. I hope my daughters have more self-respect than yet another one of the author's MCs.
It's not romantic. It's embarrassing.

Brilliant start to the Eden Manor series!
By Jessica L Sankiewicz
My Thoughts (full review):

Noelle Adams always has the loveliest stories. Unlike the majority, I adore novellas. They're short and sweet and when an author does them right, they are perfection. The first book in the Beaufort Brides spinoff series has hooked me yet again.

Here we have Vanessa who lost her husband 3 years ago. She hasn't moved on because of underlying guilt. Then there's Joe, the one guy who always gets in her way and under her skin, and not in a good way. They're stuck together for the time being, so they have to learn to work together and deal with each other. It doesn't take long for the desire to come forth and create all sorts of challenges.

One Week with her Rival was a brilliant start to the Eden Manor series! I loved the backstory of Vanessa and how she learned to cope and allowed herself to live life again. Joe was amazing and so wonderful with Vanessa, I wanted to just hug him tight. All in all, another excellent novella from the master of novellas.

My Rating: Very Good

Lucien is back, but it's Roger & Angela that'll steal your heart!
By bookworm2bookworm
I’m a huge fan of this author and her De Montforte series so when this little gem showed up on Amazon, it was a no brainer I had to read it.

Lucien de Montforte, the Duke of Blackheath is a meddler and a matchmaker so it’s not a great surprise to me that he’s up to his old tricks once more with his best friend and his cousin. He uses an old portrait as a bait for his invited guests, Sir Roger and Angela.

And although I loved visiting with Lucien and Eva, I actually adored the visiting couple. Both have distinctive personalities and traits that the other is weary of, yet both are feeling the attraction for each other and are in a quandary about how to best handle it.

If you’ve never read this author, here is a perfect little gem for you to savor her wonderful writing voice, prose and characterization. This sweet, sensual and utterly fun story is sure to bring you couple of hours of joy and have you grabbing her FREE offer of the first book of her De Montforte Brothers series The Wilde One. And once you read that story, well, you’ll be hooked for life!

SWEET And Deep Novella
By Kindle Customer
Lucien De Montforte, Duke of Blackheath is at it again...meddling in the love life of those around him. Fortunately for his friend Fox and distant cousin Angela, his meddling is driven by his need to play Cupid for those around him. Don't tell him I told you that, it would just go to His Grace's head.

Fox is haunted by his sister's death on Christmas Day three years ago. Angela is a widower whose husband died after a fall during a hunt. The coincidence? Used to bring them together is a DeMontforte ancestors painting, with an amazing resemblance to Angela, that Fox has had a crush on for eons. It's meant to be and fitting that Angela can heal Fox's hurt soul at Christmastime.

Heartwarming Novella, A Christmas Miracle...Del Montforte Style!
By Karen
On a cold, snowy Christmas Eve, two lonely individuals- both on their way to spend Christmas at Blackheath Castle, but neither knowing the other, find themselves stranded in a roadside inn for the night. Unusual circumstances, however, forced an early introduction. Sir Roger Foxcote, Esquire, best friend to Lucien Del Montforte, was not feeling the Christmas spirit, for he was mourning the loss of his little sister, three years past. For Sir Roger, Christmas was a time that he wanted to just forget. He had settled in his room with a bottle of brandy to wait out the night. It was the arrival of the other guest, the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, to the little inn, that set the night on its ear. A fight ensued downstairs over her alleged horse thievery. From her perspective, she had rescued an abused horse from its owner. The owner didn't see things that way and was demanding recompense and justice. Knowing that Sir Roger, the local magistrate was upstairs in his inn, the innkeeper brought Sir Roger downstairs, away from his brandy and into the middle of the 'horse fray.' Sir Roger, thinking to end the argument in an even-handed way, and avoid for the lady what he felt would be a much more costly punishment of Horse Thievery, required her to purchase the horse, paying a sum that she found outrageous. He was unaware of her poor financial circumstances, and totally unaware that she, too, would be on her way to the Duke of Blackhealth's home, as an invited guest the next morning. As a result of this exchange, the Lady Twyford found Sir Roger insufferable. Sir Roger found the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, for all of her five and twenty years...shrewish. Both hoped they never saw the other again.

When the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, cousin to Lucien, arrived at Blackheath castle, it follows that Lucien is up to his old matchmaking tricks again. He and his Duchess (now his accomplice to his schemes) both agree that Angel (the Dowager Baroness) and Sir Roger could be good together. She is a widow with little to no money, and in need of someone who could love her. Sir Roger, as it happens is in love with a portrait of one of Lucien and Angel's ancestresses - who looks just like Angel. It could work, they think. But they are unaware of the circumstances of the prior meeting.

There is a painting of Angel's great, great, great, great-something x great grandmother- who looks exactly like Angel. Roger has always loved that painting. The plan is Lucien's. Lucien plans to give the painting of that relative to Angel in hopes that Roger can transfer his infatuation to the living and breathing human being and fall in love. Lucien wants his best friend to be happy And he wants his cousin to be happy. However, when the two meet at dinner, Sir Roger explodes upon figuring out what Lucien is up to, and proposes to leave. Angel plans to leave at sunrise to collect her new 'horse.' Lucien begins to manipulate things. Lucien impresses upon Sir Roger that it would be the gentlemanly thing to do, if he could at least go and help her get the horse from the inn, making sure the innkeeper doesn't take advantage of her financially.

Lucien keeps his hands in things, to be sure...and interest begins to take place between the two. But is it enough? Because of his recent infatuation, Angel isn't sure she can take a chance on Roger. Can he love her, or will he always love the picture of her ancestor?

This story is a real test of Lucien's talents. It is a story of hope, love and trust. It's a heartwarming story that gives two people reason to believe in Christmas miracles. I found that once I started reading, I did not want to put the story down. When the story ended, I found myself wanting more, but not regretting that this story ended. I wanted to read more of the Del Montfortes. I wanted to read more of Lucien's fun exploits - and I cannot wait to see what his young Augustus becomes! Danelle Hamon has developed a wonderful family of characters that we, her readers, have come to know. We look forward to their adventures!

The Taylor Effect: Responding to a Secular Age, by Ian Leask with Eoin Cassidy, Alan Kearns, Fainche Ryan and Mary Shanahan

'The Taylor Effect' presents an original and diverse collection of essays addressing Charles Taylor's magisterial 'A Secular Age'. Ranging from close and critical readings of Taylor's formulations and suppositions; to comparative studies of Taylor and various 'interlocutors'; to applied approaches utilizing Taylor's concepts; to explorations launched from a Taylorian foundation; the 13 chapters comprise a multifaceted exploration of Taylor's multifaceted achievement. Given the vast, synoptic sweep of Taylor's magnum opus, the contributors represent a suitably diverse range of interests, backgrounds and expertise - members of departments of philosophy, literature, philosophical theology, systematic theology, moral theology, education, and political science, whose interests stretch from Plato to Girard, phronesis to pedagogy, Deism to dogmatics, medical ethics to aesthetics...Accordingly, 'The Taylor Effect' is not only one of the first major responses to 'A Secular Age': the astonishing breadth as well as the quality of contributions will ensure that it remains a central reference point in any future discussion of Taylor's work.

All dancers are looking to achieve optimal performance—and Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology will help them do just that.

This text helps dancers learn anatomical and biomechanical principles as they apply to dance performance. It focuses on optimal dance movement and the related principles for understanding the function of body joints. And by applying those principles, dancers can help reduce their risk of injury and enhance their performance longevity.

In addition, Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology includes special practical applications:
-Concept Demonstrations provide hands-on exercises to try.
-Tests and Measurements are specific to selected regions of the body.
-Dance Cues help analyze cue effectiveness and promote optimal movement execution.
-Study Questions and Applications help apply chapter concepts.
-Attachments provide the pronunciations, attachments, and key actions of the primary muscles covered in this text.

The first two chapters cover the skeletal and muscular systems as they apply to dance and provide basic anatomical terminology and concepts. Chapters 3 through 7 delve into specific areas of the body—the spine, the pelvic girdle and hip joint, the knee and patellofemoral joints, the ankle and foot, and the upper extremity.

These chapters encompass primary bones, muscles, joints, alignment deviations, mechanics, and injuries for the given region, with special considerations for dance. They present strength and flexibility exercises to help dancers improve technique and prevent injuries. And they contain many practical exercises and examples that are specific to dance technique to help dancers apply the material. The material is augmented by more than 250 illustrations and nearly 350 photographs, which will appeal to the visual learning abilities of many dancers and reinforce the connection between technique and art.

The final chapter presents a schema to help analyze full-body dance movements to determine optimal execution.

Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology offers valuable scientific knowledge and understanding for dancers, helping them to blend anatomical and kinesiological principles with artistic expression. Such a blend of science and art will empower dancers to realize their potential and expand their artistic vision.

Review
In 20 years of reviewing dance science books, rarely have I seen one so comprehensive, accurate, detailed, and practical. I emphasize the latter because here is a book that is loaded with practical applications for dance... both science text and dance handbook. -- Gigi Berardi, Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, 11(2) 2007

In short, few texts approach the breadth and depth of this compelling, evidence-based work. If a picture is worth 1,000 words then this must be a 200,000 page book, and thus, good value for the money. -- Gigi Berardi, Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, 11(2) 2007 Gigi Berardi, Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, 11(2) 2007

Karen Clippinger's Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology is most likely to become the definitive textbook in dance anatomy, kinesiology, and conditioning classes in colleges and universities in the United States. -- Gigi Berardi, Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, 11(2) 2007

Love this text
By mysterydancer
I have found this book extremely helpful as a reference tool that I use regularly. The illustrations are great - very clear. I like the remedial exercises that are given. I highly recommend it for teachers with some previous anatomical vocabulary. It might be a bit overwhelming for those who aren't familiar with anatomy unless it is used in conjunction with a course in the topic.

Learn Anatomy and Kinesiology all in one book!
By Pamela A. Hasselbring
This book is one of the best Anatomy and Kinesiology books mixed into one book. For those in the fitness industry this is one of the best books I've come across. We used it for our Anatomy course at our Pilates studio in Wayzata MN. The illustrations are wonderful! Karen's writing and examples makes the information enjoyable. She also uses other examples besides those in dance that are very helpful. Thanks for the wonderful book!

The dance kines bible!
By envagyok
Dance Kines teachers: use this one, not the other one! The students get it, I get it, and the exercises are applicable to all we do. So clear and so useful for just what they need, minus the stuff they don't need, or won't use. The "other" dance kines book was fine for its day but this one is better written and the photos and drawings are WAY better.

Review

"This book is, quite simply, a triumph…The beauty of the book is the way in which each topic has an algorithm on one page for brevity and clarity and on the opposing page the explanation with its necessary breadth and depth…This book was intriguing, enjoyable to read and represents good value for money."- David Warriner, Barnsley Hospital, Barnsley- British Journal of Hospital Medicine

"While most internal medicine reference books focus on delivering information and knowledge to the reader, this one assists practitioners with the use of that knowledge. Through the use of comprehensive algorithms, it reveals how the clinical decision-making and thought process requires an organized and systematic approach. This book would be a useful reference for any medical practitioner." - Heather Huang, MD, Doody’s Review Service, 4 Stars!

NEW REVIEW -- MUSHLIN / Decision Making in Medicine: An Algorithmic Approach, 3rd Edition. Elsevier, 2010, Mushlin, Stuart B., MD, FACP, FACR; Greene, Harry L., II, MD, FACP

Designed to facilitate the diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making process, this book consists of comprehensive algorithmic decision trees that guide readers through more than 250 disorders. Brief text accompanies each algorithm and explains the key steps of the decision-making process. The previous edition was published in 1998.

The purpose is to present an organized approach to making clinical decisions. It does so by presenting various algorithms that walk readers through how to diagnostically and therapeutically approach signs, symptoms, problems, or laboratory tests that could arise in various clinical internal medicine settings. The algorithms are designed to provide readers with templates that guide the clinical decision-making and thought processes. The additional goal is to minimize unnecessary testing, control medical costs, and provide uniform quality care in the evaluation of patients.

The book is written for medical practitioners, residents, medical students, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants seeking guidelines for diagnosis.

It covers a wide array of general and internal medicine topics that could be encountered in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The algorithms are organized by organ systems as well as by sign, symptom, problem, or laboratory test. Each algorithm is clearly presented and comprehensively assists readers in considering a wide range of diagnoses. Short descriptions explaining the various steps in the decision-making process of the algorithms are provided on separate pages.

While most internal medicine reference books focus on delivering information and knowledge to the reader, this one assists practitioners with the use of that knowledge. Through the use of comprehensive algorithms, it reveals how the clinical decision-making and thought process requires an organized and systematic approach. This book would be a useful reference for any medical practitioner.

A must-have for family practice
By Phaedra Henn
I use this book about 3 to 4 times a month. It has an easy layout of the most common conditions and what steps to take if you have abnormal labs or if you have a particular abnormality. It is easy to follow, and in my intelligent patients I sometimes make a copy of an algorithm for them so that they can know what the next step is in looking for a diagnosis. I would recommend this for everyone who is practicing and for every student that would like an easy layout on medicine.

Simon Bolivar: A Life, by John Lynch

Simn Bolvar was a revolutionary who freed six countries, an intellectual who argued the principles of national liberation, and a general who fought a cruel colonial war. His life, passions, battles, and great victories became embedded in Spanish American culture almost as soon as they happened. This is the first major English-language biography of “The Liberator” in half a century. John Lynch draws on extensive research on the man and his era to tell Bolvar’s story, to understand his life in the context of his own society and times, and to explore his remarkable and enduring legacy.
The book illuminates the inner world of Bolvar, the dynamics of his leadership, his power to command, and his modes of ruling the diverse peoples of Spanish America. The key to his greatness, Lynch concludes, was supreme will power and an ability to inspire people to follow him beyond their immediate interests, in some cases through years of unremitting struggle. Encompassing Bolvar’s entire life and his many accomplishments, this is the definitive account of a towering figure in the history of the Western hemisphere.

From The New Yorker
The first major English biography of Bolvar in fifty years parses the complex history of the Venezuelan aristocrat who liberated six South American countries from Spanish rule. A cult figure after his death, in 1830, El Libertador led a life that defies easy analysis: although influenced by Enlightenment ideas of equality, he rejected total democracy, fearing anarchy in the "ignorant" lower classes; determined to create strong central government, he institutionalized rule by local warlords; acutely aware of the factionalism rampant in postwar society, he was bewildered when it eventually forced him to leave his homeland. In Lynch's view, the key to Bolvar lies in his pragmatism. Leaders who have invoked his name to serve their political agendas have obscured the fact that his policies followed no single path and are meaningless out of historical context. The so-called "Bolivarian revolution" of the populist Venezuelan President Hugo Chvez is "a modern perversion of the cult."

From Booklist
Bolivar is often referred to as the George Washington of South America, but that designation can be considered somewhat of a slight, for Bolivar was an original, not an imitator, a singular man who understood the cultural, historical, and physical differences between liberating the Spanish colonies of South America and the conditions faced by Washington in the English colonies of North America. This definitive biography, based on fresh and copious research, achieves a complete picture of Bolivar's thinking, actions, and impact. Lynch, professor of Latin American history at the University of London, in his all-inclusive approach to estimating the man brings to the fore two aspects of Bolivar's life and career that may come as a surprise to readers with little background: his extensive visits to Europe (and what ideas he picked up there) and the fact that his military campaigns (presented in considerable detail) to free South America represented not a clean trajectory of success but, rather, a series of setbacks as well as successes. In all, a major biography. Brad Hooper

Review
"'A readable and up-to-date life, which will be the first resort of the curious for some time to come.' Economist 'Given the difficulty of separating man from myth, this soberly objective, well-researched biography is welcome. Professor Lynch has devoted much of his career as a Latin Americanist historian to the study of the independence war... It is fortunate that he has now chosen to bring it to bear on a biography which is both professional and readable. In all its complexity John Lynch's impressive, objective scholarship is an invaluable antidote to previous historians' and politicians' attempts to mould Bolivar to their particular ends.' David Gallagher, Times Literary Supplement 'expertly researched and elegantly written.' The Oldie"

Solid Scholarship
By colinwoodward
I am a novice regarding South American history, though Simon Bolivar has always interested me. A trip to Ecuador, where I saw one of the Liberator's swords in Quito, further spurred my curiosity about him. For those who don't know, Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) was the George Washington of South America, a general who liberated Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and Ecuador from Spanish rule. The country of Bolivia, which became a test case in the 1820s for Bolivar's constitutional ideas, is named after him.

Unfortunately, books about the general (and later president) are hard to find in the States. The most popular is Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel "The General in His Labyrinth," which explored Bolivar's last, frustrated days. In the novel, "El Liberator" is succumbing to consumption and curses the Revolution he had unleashed. No English biography of Bolivar has been written in 50 years. To fill the gap in Bolivar historiography, John Lynch, an Emeritus professor of Latin American history at University of London, has produced a solid work of scholarship. His likely audience for this book would be graduate students about to study for their comprehensive exams or people who are somewhat familiar with Bolivar's accomplishments.

Lynch's book is informative, but isn't as easy to read as some biographies are, such as David McCullough's "John Adams." "Simon Bolivar: A Life" doesn't begin with Bolivar's birth, but an earthquake that rocked Venezuela (place of SB's birth) in 1812. The earthquake was seen by some royalist clergymen as divine punishment for Venezuelans revolting against the Spanish. Lynch's book is relatively brief (300 pages), but dense. One will not find short, reader-friendly paragraphs in these pages. The author does not write for a popular audience, but a learned one. We are given much information, not just about Bolivar's life, but the social, political, and economic aspects of the Revolutionary period in South America (from the 1810s to the 1820s).

Lynch's work will help students of Latin America who must answer such questions as, "how revolutionary was the Revolution? Could Bolivar's model of government have worked?" To some extent, Bolivar's only real accomplishment was throwing off Spanish rule. Slaves in the liberated countries were not freed in the general's lifetime, and the plight of the Indians did not improve very much after the Spanish were defeated. Warlords quickly filled the political vacuum left by the royalist government. Bolivar was a creature of the Enlightenment, but he did not believe that South America could ape the American or French Revolutions. The general sought to apply revolutionary ideas in a South American context: he knew monarchy was disliked, but also that democracy couldn't work. South America's problem was that it was too democratic, too chaotic. When the Spanish left, warlords sought to control local communities at the expense of Bolivar's desire to have a centralized republic. To use an analogy from early U.S. history, Bolivar was more Hamiltonian than Jeffersonian, more a Federalist than a Republican. He knew that the areas his Colombian army did not control were a political free-for-all.

Added to the problem of home rule in South America were racial divisions between the ruling "white" elites (of which Bolivar was one), mixed-race Americans, black slaves, and Indians (Lynch, writing from less politically correct England, never uses the term Native American). Bolivar, who hated racism, struggled with these racial and political divisions. Victory was relatively easy; the peace was what was hard. Bolivar unleashed liberation on a land that was not ready for republicanism. His political dream was a "Gran Colombia" with a strong leader, something along the lines of the British constitutional monarchy (sans the king). But the people didn't want it. As soon as the Spanish were kicked out, the liberated countries wanted to go their own way. Was Bolivar right about the need for a strong, single leader ruling the liberated countries? Or does it even matter, because his centralized republic could never have worked? Such are questions for debate.

In helping answer these historical questions, Lynch's organization of facts and subjects is impeccable. If the book has a flaw, it is that it reads at times more like a history of the Revolutionary period than a biography. As informative as it is, I still didn't quite feel that I had learned enough about Bolivar the man. Overall, Lynch's writing perhaps could use more dashes of romanticism. Still, it is a very good book. As a final note: those who don't know Spanish might want to keep a Spanish dictionary handy. Some words aren't explained or can't be figured out from their context.

Valuable With Some Limitations
By R. Albin
This is the first English language biography of Bolivar in approximately 50 years. It is based on a great deal of modern scholarship and authored by a recognized expert on early 19th century Latin America. It is thoughtful and thorough. It is, unfortunately, a somewhat frustrating book. Lynch is a competent, as opposed to good, writer. The narrative tends to skip around a bit and parts are repetitive. Lynch seems also to have had his fellow scholars in mind as the target of this book. The text seems to presuppose a fair prior knowledge of 19th century Latin American history. In several respects, this book seems to be essentially a summary of modern scholarship on Bolivar rather than a full fledged interpretative biography.

Within these limitations, this is a useful book. Lynch does an excellent job of describing Bolivar's complex personality. Lynch emphasizes the continuity in Bolivar's motivations and thinking throughout his career. The product of an elite Venezualan creole family, Bolivar grew up to espouse a complex mixture of idealistic Enlightenment rationalism and romantic nationalism leavened by a healthy dose of pragmatism. His pursuit of personal glory seems also to have a major factor in his incessant pursuit of freedom from Spain. Lynch does well also in describing the highly adverse conditions under which Bolivar pursued his aims. A major theme of the book is the frustration of Bolivar's Enlightenment reformism by the actions of the native elites he set in power and general weakness of civil society in early 19th century South America.

A useful book but one which underscores the need for a major biography.

Where Is the Soldier?
By Charles J. Edwards
Above all, Bolivar thought of himself as a soldier, which makes it very strange that Professor Lynch provides virtually no discussion of this aspect of Bolivar's life. There are some aspects of grand strategy, such as the discussion of Bolivar's decision to liberate Venezuela by moving to Columbia (New Granada) and invading from the southwest. But there is nothing about how Bolivar conducted himself in a battle, nothing about his tactics, his command of logistics. You will not find out anything about the character of his army -- what weapons? what balance of cavalry and infantry? And how about a little detail about the Bolivar's famous crossing of the Andes, memorialized in Napoleon-style paintings?

At one point, Professor Lynch disposes of a complete campaign by simply listing the names of seven battles -- nothing more!

I will echo some other reviewers by saying that Lynch does a good job of evaluating Bolivar's philosophy and exploring the political, social and economic milieu in which he operated. But the neglect of a central element of Bolivar's life means that his biography is incomplete.

I would consider this a good supplementary study after reading a comprehensive biography of the Liberator.

A note about maps: The maps are inadequate; two simple line drawings of nothern South America and the continent as whole, with national boundaries, cities and major rivers -- nothing more. They illustrate nothing about the topography in which Bolivar operated. The geography of northern South America played a critical role not only in his military campaigns but also in the politics and economics of the region -- the presence of the Andes in itself doomed his project to unite New Granda (present Columbia), Venezuela and Ecuador in a grand republic of Columbia. The publisher should have invested enough to show the location of the Andes at least!
