Grade 4-8–Nickie longs to escape from her life in Philadelphia where everything seems to be going wrong. She thinks she has found the perfect haven in her great-grandfather's estate in Yonwood, NC. But the war between the United States and the Phalanx Nations seems imminent and the Church of the Fiery Vision takes over the town, and all her goals seem farther away than ever. In Yonwood, people are not what they seem. The host of characters include a prophet and her interpreter who the townspeople blindly follow, a girl in the closet, a boy obsessed with snakes, and a hermit who can crack open the sky. Jean DuPrau has created an unusual prequel (Random, 2006) to The City of Ember (2003) and The People of Sparks (2004, both Random). Rather than the pre-apocalyptic climate one would expect, the backwoods setting, the humming bracelet, and the robot vacuum cleaner give the novel a strange anachronistic feeling. Becky Ann Baker's depiction of the native North Carolinian accent is believable, and she voices all the characters perfectly. Sound effects enhance the telling. Listeners new to the series will have no problem following along—this title can stand on its own. The ending drags a bit as DuPrau tries to wrap up all the subplots. Ember fans will be a little disappointed that only the subtleties in the last chapter, What Happened Afterward, point to The City of Ember. Doesn't belong in the series - FILLER!

I have no idea what DuPrau was thinking when she included this book in the series since it is not really a prequel and its story has a flat quality that honestly seemed like an episode of "Three's Company" - you know when there would be some big misunderstanding? That is this book - it is a huge misunderstanding.

Ridiculous is the only word for the tacked on ending that is obviously put there to tie the book into the series.

It would have been a much better book if instead of being 50 years before people even went into the City of Ember it happened right before the cataclysm - perhaps showing us what lead to the destruction and then what it was like for those first people in the City of Ember to adjust to their new life underground.

This story made little sense and just dragged on - I knew all the devices and ended up skimming the pages to make it to the inevitable conclusion. I know these are kids books but any 10 year old would have seen the ending coming from a mile away.

You can completely read the entire series without reading this book though she tries to tie in the final book with this one in a paragraph but it really doesn't mean anything. Aliens? Puhleeze!

This book is good but it scared me a little. It doesn't seem like it has a connection to the other books of Ember from the series for most of it but at the end it does and I liked that.

Sound piece of political philosophy

This is a fine little piece of Maritain's work. Starting with the definitions of the body politic, state, nation, etc. Maritain elucidates the proper notion of authority in a democracy, an authority that can must be in accord with Natural Law. The chapter on human rights is worth the cost of the book itself, as the west is in dire need of a sound notion of human rights and ought to jettison the ilusory notions of such as promulgated and derived from the philosophies of Locke, Hobbes, and Rousseau.
It is no surprise that Maritain played a significant role in drafting a charter on human rights with the United Nations. Read this work in conjunction with his other work entitled "Natural Law" and also Yves Simon's "Philosophy of Democratic Government"

Another View of Men and the State vs. The Higher Law

Jacques Maritain (1882-1973)wrote this book after W.W. II, and it was published in 1951. This book was an optimistic yet practical view of political power and Ultimate Values or the Higher Law. Maritain argued that a practical view of political power and rights could work if men recognized such a state for their mutual benefit in spite of religious and political differences.

Maritain's opening sections of this book dealt with definitions of the nation, political state, nationalism, race, cultural influences, etc. Maritain argued that the state should be used to insure justice and maintain peace to protect citizens. The state became dangerous when it became adored and became an end of itself at the expense of justice and rights. In other words the state became dangerous when the state authorities were more concerned about protecting themselves than the rights of citizens. In other words, Maritain warned that the state became dangerous when it became an object of adoration rather than an instrument to insure justice and the safety of citizens. To paraphrase George Washington (1732-1799), the state was necessary like fire but dangerous when out of control.

Maritain warned readers of political "buzz words" of modern poltical vocabulary. For example, Maritain gave a warning of Rousseau's (1712-1778)book THE SOCIAL CONTRACT who claimed that reason gave men the freedom to be free of each other but not the General Will which was the will of the state. A good assessment was an explanation of Vox Popupli, Vox Dei or The Will of the People is the Will of God. One must ask what people and what if the Will of the People victimized those whom the state or General Will deemed as not worthy.

Maritain was also critical of the Divine Right of Kings whereby monarchs were answerable only to God and considered as God's Lieutenants on earth. As St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) wrote, an evil ruler beyond control could lead people to evil and mortal sin. Maritain also diagnosed Hobbes' (1588-1679) book titled THE LEVIATHAN whereby Hobbes considered the ruler as a mortal god answerable to God with the same evil consequences. Citizens became deputies of evil men, and citiznes had no recourse of recall of an unjust ruler.

Maritain also examined Machiavelli's (1469-1527) THE PRINCE. What Maritian may not have realized is the book titled THE PRINCE was more of a warning than a political prescription. Unjust rulers certainly did not need Machiavelli to advise them on the art of political survival and power. What Maritain critisized was the praise of political technique rather than a just political system. The aim of political institutions was justice and protection of citizens rather than "immediate success."

Maritain had an interesting view of The Rights of Man. He was clear that if men had unbridled rights, they would soon turn on each other without a sense of Ultimate Values. Maritain remarked that a chaos of "rights" turn some into zealous slave drivers because of the chaos of such diverse interests. Maritian said a higher law existed that should be considered as menitioned in Sophocles (480-406 BC)play titled THE ANTIGONE. Maritian noted that The Higher Law was a serious consideration when laws and rulers were unjust and evil. Maritian should have warned readers that if people do not study history, they will lose their rights.

Maritain suggested in his chapter THE DEMOCRATIC CHARTER that if men could men could be reasonable enough to be practical, they could live in a pluralistic society where there was a consensus to respect the rights of others who were of different religions, political creeds, ancestry, etc. Maritian may have realized that such a state of affairs was historically rare, and approximately 6,000 years of history were grounds for pessimism.

Maritian was clear that he was a devout Catholic. He knew of some of the wrong doing re Catholic History and was not naive. Yet, he was also aware of the achievments during approximately 2,000 years of Catholic History. He wrote that in spite of persecution and tyrannical oppression, the Church's martyrs defied evil oppressors because of their freedom of spirit and loyalty to a "Higher Law." Maritain should have cited Canon Law and Catholic Church councils such as the Fourth Lateran Council (1215)whereby Catholic Churchmen emphasized par legum (due process)and " scientific legal system" which in theory emphasized "fair play" and justice. This was not always the case, but the ideal and basis of a fair legal system were in place.

The undersigned thought the book was too idealistic, but Maritian made more sense than most of those who have held political power during the 20th and early 21st. century. Maritain's ideal vision may not occur, but his book "is on the record" of what a thoughtful man considered a practical guide for MAN AND THE STATE.

Man and The State presents a profound view of the state and its role in the body politic.

Man and the State is concerned with the relationships between the person, the body politic, and the state. Maritain draws on history, Thomistic philosophy, and political philosophy to present a vision of a future state that best serves the person, the common good, and preserves peace among nations.

The pain of World War II, communism, and the advent of the atomic bomb prompted Maritain to consider the relationship between man and the state. His assessment that dictatorships reliant on oppression could not survive was proved by actual events. The world has changed since this book was written; most notably the fall of communism and the establishment of democracies in many countries throughout the world. These changes verify the validity of the ideas presented in this book.

Man and the State is grounded in reason, sober in expectation, and rich in hope. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in political philosophy.

Good book. Kind of tedious towards the end

It's a good book in the sense it updates what Sun Tzu taught before. However it delved into tediously going over the specifics of just about everything, unlike Tzu who taught and moved on.

Good translation, interesting history --

-- but I found Macchiavelli's content frankly disappointing. The translation is modern and readable, I have no problem with that. The original was centuries behind Sun Tzu's book of the same name, even though Sun Tzu wrote around 500BC, 2000 years before Macchiavelli. Macchiavelli gives a bit of advice about soldierly temperament and training. There's also a brief checklist, just two pages, of strategic advice, near the end of the book. That's all that really has lasting value.

The bulk of the text is taken up with the right way to position each kind of soldier and arm, rank and file, in marching order. Basically, these were detailed directions for a military parade, suited to the set-piece wars of the time, as much pageant as combat. He also goes on about the right kinds of pennants, flags, and colors to use, proper military music, how to make camp, and proper pillaging and distribution of booty.

Directions on how to make camp are subject to errors, though: a measurement 1360 feet long, minus 100 feet at each end, is said to leave a row 1260 feet long rather than 1160 - perhaps an error introduced by the translator, but I tend to think not. He also takes the "reduction" and sacking of conquered towns for granted. I think Master Sun was a bit more merciful (or prgamatic), on the grounds that the wealth of newly annexed parts of the kingdom should be preserved, and the citizens kept happy enough for easy rule. With a startling lack of foresight, Macchiavelli dismisses serious use of artillery in pitched battles. Instead, he falls back on strategies of the Greeks and Romans, 1000 to 2000 years old even when he wrote. Sun Tzu's warfare had a much more modern look to it, including hit-and-run tactics that the West barely understood until the American revolution.

The quality of the translation worth four or five stars, partly because of helpful notes and diagrams. It's the original work that I found weak.

The Valentine Infantry Tank III, a private venture design from Vickers-Armstrong, was the 3rd of Great Britain's infantry tank designs. The Valentine received its baptism of fire with the British 8th Army in Operation Crusader in North Africa during July 1941, just the beginning of a long career, as they would eventually take part in combat in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After the war, Valentines continued to serve several British Commonwealth armies as late as the 1950s. Besides fighting under the Union Jack, Valentines saw action with the armed forces of Canada, the Soviet Union, Australia, and New Zealand. Illustrated with 250 photos, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 88 pages.

Valentine Tank Walk Around

The British Valentine tank was not the best of WW2, but since it was about the best the Brits had at the time, over 8200 were made. The early versions had 2lbr cannon (40mm) later had 6 lbr (57mm). Key differences were found in which mark had a 2 man turret vs. 3 man turret.

This Walk Around has photos of the Mark III, Mark VI photos and Mark IX. Photos by author David Doyle and Dennis Trowbridge are fantastic. Unfortunately, the photos of the Mark VI were taken indoors and the tank looks blue and on the darker side. These photos are OK, but there are no interior shots to show the difference of a 2 vs 3 man turret. A line drawing would have been very useful here.

As a modeler, I would absolutely recommend this book to someone building a version of the Valentine. The captions are excellent, there is a ton of information helpful to modelers, armor buffs, definitely a book to add to the library, just not quite up to the usual gold star standard found in the Walk Around Series (many of them authored by David Doyle).
