"Big Daddy" drew me in

I bought this book because I had read Carries' amazing poem "Big Daddy" in an online zine. I wasn't disappointed. The poems are filled with southern nuances that hit home with this southern girl, reminding me of moments from my own life. Carrie covers so much territory from the soft moments in life to the quirky, how-the-hell-did-that-happen ones. I highly rec this book of poetry to those who prefer real-life experiences over frothy fantasy.

Telling stories through her verse, "After the Revival" is about a woman who isn't afraid to play dirty in life but keeps to her life's faith. "After the Revival " is a fresh and intriguing collection. "When the Rider is Hope": We pilot evening's cryptic air/fused as faith and plea in prayer./My burden's to become pure flight;/his, to right me if I scare.//When my blind spot blurs the fence,/he imparts his confidence:/his Easy girl, his loose-rein hands,/reprimand my reticence.//Heel to rib, approach then thrust,/I'm suspended by his trust,/playing earth's brief renegade/in bascules made of breath and dust.

Great craft. If that sounds a downer, part I's feisty, part II(the 'Wedding Suite')'s fantastic (great epigraph from George Herbert!), Part III's a little too rawhide for me - I know I recently praised Horse and Rider, but hey, horses for courses. Very 'rooted' and solid in a way the last Waywiser I reviewed, Dora Malech, so isn't; that was more poetic Esperanto - which also has its place, I guess. Jerrell's gritty, direct, sparky, sincere - and funny; Malech also does horses(p63) but are they real or - publish it not in the streets of Askelon - simply froth? Efferent bullet holes I liked, and bascules of dust - and Dottie 'Tease it up to Jesus' West was new to me; but Pekingese or Pekinese, please, NOT Pekingnese! And is that really how Philip Larkin spelt his name, Alan?

Well this won't be a very popular review among many who know me. Change some names, change some places - this book is the story of my life. I read it in one day, cried several times, and am thankful that Elizabeth Coleman was brave enough to write it.

I read the book in one sitting! Elizabeth describes her childhood inside the cult and her love for God and family but most importantly how God led her to faith in Christ alone. Aside from the excellent details about doctrinal beliefs, she has done an incredible job of explaining the emotional, spiritual, mental and physical stress that it takes to leave the Two by Two fellowship. I praise God that someone has written a book that covers all the bases. Elizabeth has gumption. She never backed down from the workers' on a face to face conversation. She describes situations, people, emotions, places and events with such accuracy that you can feel them. She gives her story from a woman's perspective which is different and perhaps more difficult than a man's experience. Women and girls have more rules to follow and are more visible in demonstrating the mind control; which proves they believe the Lie or not. And women are usually more attached to their family of origin and want to please their parents with all their hearts. Whether one is a man or woman makes no difference....the 2x2 "spirit" destroys one's identity and will. The workers use the devotion people feel towards their family to leverage their power in the members' lives. One must overcome deep attachments, just as Jesus said in Matthew 10:37, "He that loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that takes not his cross and follows me is not worthy of me." This book should be on every Ex 2x2's shelf and on their gift list.

Christian pastors need to read this book to help them understand the trauma experienced by someone raised under mind control. The statistics show how few ex-cultists ever come to faith in Christ simply because they have been so confused and abused by demonic doctrines.

I bought and used this book as a student for 2 semesters at UNCC with the author as the professor. Mistakes in English and Russian everywhere. We told her in class.Some outdated information on culture - check the section on how they write addresses on envelopes in Russia and in this book, or singers, family, etc. As if time froze in the 90s or DR. Anastasia never traveled to Russia since then. Visuals are some primitive black-and-white pictures drawn by a child, perhaps. Lots of underlining and bold script as if shouting at you. If only you are mandated by your teacher to buy it, otherwise avoid.

She is the nicest teacher ever. She is very helpful and NO she hasn't traveled to Russian since she has come to the United States. However we have pointed out the mistakes made in the book and she has taken notes on it, so whenever she prints the newest copy of the edition she can fix them.

Excellent for an ebook

This is a good manual for vintage traditional tailoring techniques. A lot of great tips and worthwhile reading. 4 stars because there are several OCR errors ("basting" transcribed as "fasting") and as typical with manuals of this period, not as many diagrams as a modern reader would probably prefer. I'm glad I bought this ebook.
